I think the reason EFL fucks that stuff up all the time is that when you're a kid just learning to speak, you're not aware of the structure of language on an intellectual level and it's more of an intuitive understanding that slowly develops; you know that based on context, a word you speak can have different meaning, but for the first 7 years of your life, "your" and "you're" are the exact same word and you then have to later try to sort that out when you learn to read and write. A lot of people never seen to get over it. My wife, coworkers, etc. all fuck it up regularly.
