Why isn't formal logic taught in American schools? This stuff is interesting, and useful, but I never encountered it until college. That seems absurd. I should have been learning this at age 14/15 alongside calc I or whatever math course I was taking at the time. It's complementary. And APPARENTLY, logic and rhetoric used to be CORE components of school curriculums. But they were suppressed and removed after World War II. I wonder why...
>>543900973>we should teach the trivium!>no the quadrivium!thanks middle aged midwit
>>543900973>usefulFor what?
>>543900973part 1:they weren't removed.i'll explain.in new york state they have what's known as "regents diplomas" and "local dilpomas".the schools i went to were all regents schools.we were taught logic and rhetoric.if you got shit grades they'd let you get a local diploma if you failed the 5 regents exams.however, in 2028 they are not using a local diploma as a "ok, you suck at school, but go get a job.">cont. part 2
>>543901574now regents are basically an elective and there's no forcing it.it's the literal drop of expectations and allowing the dumbing down of american youth.

>>543900973Logic is good. The various otherwise-unknown shapes that textbooks use in logic formulas, however, are not good. The squiggles would need a key on every page and it would be better if there were no squiggles at all.>inb4 someone calling me a midwitI am merely answering OP's question. The squiggles are the answer.
>>543900973The basic concepts are fine and are important of computer science, but the "arithmetics" ultimately lose meaning when your proofs and arguments become too complex (basically anything practical IRL).Nobody is going to write a massive formula just to prove that their argument is valid. Also, IRL situations tend to have a lot of subjective and/or unkown factors that, if even one is mixed with hard pure logic, it invalidates everything.
>>543900973That's a lot of simps.

>>543900973i took an elective class on this during my bachelor's degree and my professor was this grey long haired gandalf looking guy that didn't really gave a fuck about anything this was in upr bayamon wonder if he's still alive
>>543900973It is.

I'm homeschooling my son using a classical curriculum (Memoria Press). When he's in 9th grade Logic is part of the curriculum and he'll study Rhetoric in 12th grade. He's only in second right now but he's started Latin already while the kids in public school are learning about rainbow flags and residential school hoax genocides.
>>543900973It used to be, it was called "Elementary Math" and was taught in between arithmetic and trig/pre-calcBut it was eliminated from the curriculum because women and browns are bad at it, like all interesting and useful subjects
Because school isn’t for learning
>>543900973>Why isn't formal logic taught in American schools? We have calculators>This stuff is interestingYes>and usefulNo, it's philosophical math. It's the same reason we can't define consciousness - theologians use circular logic to hide behind abstract intangibles such as "qualia" which cannot be objectively measured, making it impossible establish a rigorous proof in any direction.>I should have been learning this at age 14/15 alongside calcNo you should definitely be using a graphing calculator>And APPARENTLY, logic and rhetoric used to be CORE components of school curriculumsIt was removed because what happens is people realize that none of it is actually useful in the real word - you can't philosophize your way out of engineering a bridge. Also it's curricula, not curriculums. Even an AI could have told you that
>>543900973I get the point of this, but it lead to more programming oriented ideas, which is where it got its use. Nowdays those papers seem like philosophy major wanting to be computer programmers
