I recently watched a bit of the detective series Endeavour, and it made me realise that the 'sensitive young artistic man' archetype has largely disappeared from literature.I think he still crops up a bit in indie films, a little less in TV, and not at all in literature (where he has been replaced by the 'darkly alienated female protagonist'.) I honestly suspect it's directly proportional to how many of the novels out there are written by women, for women. Like, would a book with a protagonist like that of, say, Holden Caulfield, get published today? Could a man who is quiet, intellectual, passive, unlucky in love and with a sincere interest in the arts be earnestly presented as a protagonist without being viewed as just incel apologia?You would assume that this meeker/less sexual personality would be more amenable to the Fleabag girlies of the world, but the opposite is the case. He is deemed either a hypocrite/fraud, or just repulsive at face value. Think the stereotypical 'David Foster Wallace' fan as caricatured by this culture (Guy in your MFA etc). The gender war has mostly made it so that male interiority is not allowed to simply exist and be observed with interest for what it is without being relentlessly interrogated for entitlement, resentment waiting to curdle or just a fake performance to try to make up for being ugly.(1/2)
IF there is a sensitive young man in books these days, he is a) support character/love interest to the female lead and b) buff/hot as fuck (a combination which virtually doesn't exist in real life, and essentially a complete abandonment of the archetype because the whole POINT of the sensitive young man is that his rich inner life is worth your time despite him not being anybody's sexual fantasy). I'm primarily thinking of Sally Rooney books and their ilk FWIW.The only ways to get away with an actual sensitive young man played straight are to either make him gay so the reader won't worry about him being a nuisance or threat to women, or drench him in self-conscious irony and make him constantly apologize for being who he is to the point of flat-out self-loathing.When and how did this shift happen?(2/2)
