Lord Ganesh comes to stay with us for a week or two every year around this time, we symbolically buy or build a Ganesh statue and worship it in our homes, we call all our friends and family to come chant and sing mantras and hymns in our homes, eat sweets, have dinner (only vegetarian food), do some networking, etc. etc. This goes on everyday for upto 14 days. Then, we bid goodbye to Lord Ganesha, asking him to 'come back next year Ganesha!". Many major cities in India have their own Ganesha. Immersing in water is symbolic way of saying "auf wiedersehen". In ancient times, villagers built simple small clay statues and immersed them in local ponds and rivers. These Ganeshas are called "kings" of their host city for a short time.
