He allegedly told an FBI informant he wanted to kill 30 to 60 people and said he chose the mall in part because he believed its owners were Jewish. According to the affidavit, he wanted to travel to Somalia to join ISIS but couldn’t afford the trip. By July 2026, he was discussing an attack in Minnesota, initially mentioning the Mall of America or Valleyfair around Christmas before settling on the October event.> Mohamud told an FBI agent he was “100 percent committed” to his plan, according to Christopher D. Dotson, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Minneapolis field office. Rosen said at Wednesday’s news conference that once investigators determined Mohamud had an attack plan and was fully committed, the danger to the public required intervention.> Mohamud believed he was communicating with an ISIS supporter. That person was actually an FBI informant who exchanged messages with him across several apps and connected him with the undercover agent selling the gun.
