Hardcore academic maths is basically a sheltered workshop for very high IQ autists. They get government grants and literally lock themselves up in the ivory towers. You can understand how freaked out they will be getting when they do the math and work out that the government grants are going to stop and the ivory towers are going to be repurposed into migrant hotels.

Even before AI, pure maths was swirling the drain. It was facing major funding cuts just about everywhere. There was a whole campaign based around saving pure maths specifically.

The average maths PhD isn't doing anything pure. It's mostly applied stuff. Virological modelling, machine learning, fluid dynamics, etc. A lot of the prestige for the subject is inherited from older generations who don't exist anymore. Physics is the same.
>>
>>543959355
Ok. But. If they DID solve a problem that human beings couldnt and the answer is ignored because mUh Ai then the AI isnt the issue. It's a tool. If it comes up with a way to travel to mars in a day are we gonna ignore it because we didnt come up with it without a tools help?

AI steals from the future. It steals half finished human work, completes it using existing techniques to produce mediocre solutions. The problem is nothing new is created, no new techniques. When mathematicians work with limited knowledge they can actual advance into new directions not previously tread. All AI can do is rehash what already existed, ending progress forever.

The biggest danger in AI doing all these things is in killing intellectual prestige for entire fields people won't pursue those fields. If people don't pursue them they won't ever become knowledgeable enough to know what future questions need to be solved to even ask ai to solve it.
So ai may solve existing questions but who asks the next ones? It is not currently sophisticated enough to create and solve new real theories without prompts. It depends on people knowing what those questions are.

It didn't. The people at NYU working on the problem were using OpenAI (and Anthropic) to help solve it. OpenAI used telemetry to see who was prompting what, saw that this team of researchers had an answer in the works that just needed some brute force, and then they finished it themselves. This is exactly what Alex Karp said would happen -- these companies are just going to steal your work, while you're paying them to do it.

I agree with you.
I'm sensitive to the fact that these are intelligent professionals who need to make a living, and who even need to be motivated by the desire to garner some glory and fame by solving problems. But at the end of the day, I think anyone who ultimately decides to purposefully stunt scientific advancement out of personal pride & ego needs to fuck off. Their careers aren't sacred in the face of expanding the base of human knowledge. While I empathize with them, they need to have some sobriety and humility when it comes to the position they find themselves in.
AI itself is an important technological advancement, and it will be a core facet of other important technological and scientific advancements going forward. Denying that to coddle a bunch of boomers who are afraid of becoming obsolete is asinine. Comparing it to refusing the use of calculators is valid.
The goal of scientific advancement should be the expansion of knowledge itself, not the furtherance of the insular careers and achievements of a small cabal of academics.

are you morons capable of reading? of course not. they're not saying that LLMs shouldn't be used. almost every mathematician already uses LLMs in some form for research; for fuck's sake, the entire discipline of "artificial intelligence" is mathematical in nature. the problem is in these faggot companies spending millions of dollars to brute force solutions with black box models they refuse to share, purely as a PR stunt, with no intention to actually do anything with the result, other than ask for more funding to brute force more shit. they are not here to further the field, they are here hoping to recover more money from investors than they spend on making these advertisements. mathematicians, for instance, could never use these models and this level of compute for their own research, because openAI is operating at a huge loss to do this - not because anyone requested it, but because they believe it will serve their own agenda

Your whole argument is irrational and says more about your own sense of absolute entitlement than anything.
You're conflating the motives and business model of the people building a tool with the scientific value of what the tool can accomplish. If a closed commercial model produces a genuinely new mathematical result, the result doesn't become scientifically worthless because OpenAI wanted investors. You can criticize the lack of openness, compute inequality, or corporate incentives without pretending that privately funded research ceases to be scientific advancement. Bell Labs, IBM, pharmaceutical companies, and countless other private institutions have produced enormous amounts of publicly valuable knowledge without doing it out of pure altruism. ‘They're doing it for profit’ is an argument about incentives, not an argument against the validity of the resulting discovery.
Not to mention, again, you're being a hypocrite because ultimately the only reason these scientists are even bitching in the first place is because it's competition that's directly eating into their own resources. Their motives are literally the exact same as what you're bitching about: Fame, fortune, funding. It's so fucking clear you're just insecure about the fact that academics are inevitably going to get less career advancement and acknowledgment, but my opinion is that scientists are subordinate to science. If scientists aren't delivering scientific advancements, then yeah, they're becoming obsolete. Whining about it is no different than truckers getting all butthurt about being replaced by self-driving vehicles. You're just a myopic luddite that's obsessed with your own needs at the expense of the rest of society.

>A sign error
Good. I was highly suspicious they were nerfing public models, because anyone who's ever actually tried to do anything with AI and math winds up with picrel. It's is quite literally impossible to stop a model from hallucinating sign inversions, due to the nature of token prediction, so when they started shilling the math models, I immediately called total bullshit.

I even wrote a special program to try and force the models to output math tokens in torch (you can get models to speak in GPU programming, where the token selection is much tighter) but even then it will hallucinate and just happily toot and zoom along there

There are ways of running a custom python harness and instantiate a round table of experts for verification - and it will stop hallucinations, but each reasoning cycle was using up ~64k tokens, and this was with a model that *allegedly* scored ~88% on aime, which is impressive for a 26b parameter model

This is why they have to use "unreleased models" because there is simply no fucking way they aren't wasting ~95% of compute combating hallucinations

Today, a proof of the 4-dimensional Kakeya conjecture was released. This is an absolutely stunning result. For context, just this summer, Hong Wang received the 2026 Fields Medal for work including her breakthrough with Joshua Zahl on the 3-dimensional Kakeya conjecture.

The Unique Games Conjecture was probably the biggest tractable open problem in computational complexity theory (perhaps theoretical computer science as a whole) and it is a remarkable achievement to prove it.

Unique Games Conjecture proved

L = RL = BPL

This. Remember when GPS first was a thing and it'd tell you turn when there was no street or just generally got lost. There was a joke in an episode of The Office about it where Michael drove into a lake because the GPS told him to. That was like 20 years ago. Yes, my boomer parents still print maps when they travel, "as a backup," but my kids have no concept of a GPS being wrong and trust it blindly. Even if the current generation of people never 100% trust the AI to not make mistakes, 20-30 years from now the idea of an AI hallucination will as farfetched as GPS errors now.

Isnt this just the calculator version 2.0? Seems like a silly thing to protest. My main problem with AI is how midwits worship it and take anything it outputs as gospel. The next plandemic is going to be such a nightmare.
>AI says masks and lockdowns work so put your mask on and get in your house
>AI says that vaccines save lives so you dont get a choice now
90% of normies will think this way.

The funny thing about many modern 'right wingers' taking up AI maximalism is that they are taking the fundamentally left wing position that 'all of man's work belongs to all men equally.'
Vaguely related.

Those advanced math insights do seem completely abstract and pointless, especially because pure mathematicians and science writers are all 'muh mystical numbers are le key to the universe'. But a lot of abstract-seeming maths gets used solving problems like calculating the most efficient airline routes or figuring out how to make the computer chips in your phone (which stopped being designed by hand years ago).
If you genuinely want to know how math turns into real world benefits the easiest entry point is books on computer algorithms.

Anyway the significant thing here is not that it puts mathies out of a job - if anything they're going to be more busy for the foreseeable future, but for most of them their jobs are quickly going toward doing zero research and instead validating computer proofs which will drain all the meaning out of it unless they were S-tier to begin with. The practical impact is that AI is closer again to improving itself. Basically the way most AI works now is converting patterns (in words, images, whatever) into vectors of very high dimensional spaces (hundreds or even thousands of dimensions) and then reducing those problems down to more manageable numbers like 32 dimensions and doing shape-matching/sorting/fitting problems. The better AI becomes at math, the better the next generation of AI becomes. You have to understand that we're already well past the point of using AI to make new kinds of AI, using AI to collect the data used to train AI, using AI to build the systems that feed the AI training data into the AI and validate the outputs etc. All of the cutting-edge papers in the AI field are being done with the help of AI and the authors are investigating it like a natural phenomenon and trying to study its emergent properties because nobody fully understands how it does what it does at this point.
