It's good at keeping a normal standard of living consistently, not for "shooting for the stars" as the west promises. Eastern bloc countries recovered from WW2 much faster than western ones, but then stagnated in everything. Which is good in a way, as even the birth rate stagnated (didn't rise or fall) unlike in the west where they experienced a baby boom and then a massive drop. The east only experienced a massive drop after the fall of communist regimes in the 90s
