Iran can't really defend it against an US occupation.They then can sign up a deal in which Iran promises not to get a nuclear bomb nor enrich uraniun under US supervision, as well as proceding with the dismantling of their nuclear facilities, etc. If they don't take the deal, US forces occupy the island idefinitely (will annihilate Iran's economy and likely cause a civil war). If they accept the deal in exchange of eventually taking back sovereignty of the islands, Trump gets his little political victory.
