Realistically how long is it until Elon Musk owns the entire internet?

I've been looking into Starlink's capabilities and it really looks so much better and cheaper than anything on the market. As someone who learned Economics in college, I worry about monopolies. If I didn't have a basic trust in the guy's morals I'd be much more scared about it, but whoever takes his place will also have that kind of colossal power.

Is anyone else thinking about this? This could be bigger than the net neutrality debates in the 2010s.

What the fuck are you talking about retard?

Does anyone else have the kind of satellite coverage Starlink does? There's videos of "the Starlink effect" where you see a cluster of kids from some obscure tribe somewhere in the middle of nowhere clustered around a smartphone. It's actually amazing.
>>
cable internet isn't going anywhere, for a variety of reasons.
>>
>>543997746
I have it because there are absolutely no other options beyond shitty ancient satellite internet like Hughesnet with <5mbps speeds, and I'm genuinely shocked at how good it actually is. I have the 200mbps plan and I'm almost always at 180-200, during peak hours I drop to about 120. There's almost zero downtime and no stuttering at all in games. If you have fiber available and can eat the extra cost I would say go for that instead, but starlink is honestly shockingly good and you wouldn't regret getting it. I'm sure it doesn't really apply to you but it's also really nice being able to bring it with you literally wherever you have power since I go camping really deep in national forests a lot.
>>
>>543998343
I would appreciate if you were to enumerate some of them for me.
>>
>>543998571
Well here is one i personally dealt with, its dogshit for competitive gaming.
Perhaps in US its "good enough" but i highly doubt it.
>>
>>543998632
I genuinely haven't noticed any issues at all with games. I don't get any stuttering at all on any game. I feel like it has to do with just how much satellite saturation you have overhead more than anything honestly.
>>
It’s shit for comp gaming as Vanja Petrovski said. Loss of packets, high ping, high latency etc
>>
>>543998632
you guys always cheat anyways
>>

He'll never have a monopoly, Anon. There will always be ISPs with fiberoptic networks. Starlink has inherent lag, there are limited frequencies and inherent bandwidth limitations, and other countries are putting up their own Starlink-equivalents already (primarily for military use but still). Even Bezos is trying to compete, and I hope that obnoxious asshole fails miserably, but the U.S. government isn't going to allow BONG to fail because they want competition for Musk and they want a second launch provider (and ULA is failing hard).
>>
>>543998785
I googled that name and it was a Servian doctor woman...
Is this a reference to something I'm unfamiliar with?
>>
>>543998848
What's BONG?

>There's almost zero downtime and no stuttering at all in games.
Depends on the games you play, I guess, not to mention your skill level. I wouldn't notice it in Minesweeper either, because it doesn't use the fucking internet.

Sending a radio signal to orbit and back means a round-trip lightspeed delay. That's a guaranteed minimum 3ms to Starlink's orbital height and back, and realistically double that because the link isn't always going to be straight vertical both directions. That has to be added on top of the lag from when your data gets propagated through the terrestrial networks that Starlink connects to.

Hell, that's a factor that I hadn't even thought about until now -- Starlink doesn't have the capacity to move all the data solely on its own satellite network. Elon would probably need to put up a few million satellites to do that.

Blue Origin New Glenn, the "reusable rocket" that Bezos has managed to fly three times in the last ten years. Hell, even Arianespace has a faster launch cadence.

You don't know John Smith from Iowa Oblast?
>>
>>543999242
I play all kinds of games including some of the "twitchy" ones everyone says they have problems with and there are zero issues for me. It has far more to do with your overhead satellite saturation, your distance to whatever starlink ground station is closest to you, your dish's obstructions, and whether you're using ethernet or wifi than the hardware itself. My connection is always completely stable. I get a couple of sudden lag spikes to like 200ms back to back probably once a month or so, that's it.

Almost every major government has massive constellations of satellites.
>>
>>543997746
The fuck you are talking about. How about talking to an AI before you post your dumb shit on the internet. Starlink only support 10gbps per 10 mile diameter. one single fiber can go as high as 300 tbps. You can cram like 20 fiber in one large cable. They are not remotely the same.

>>543999332
Now I know you're just messing with me, lol>>543999395
>>
>>543998008
im gonna call bullshit on the cluster of kids from some obscure tribe somewhere in the middle of nowhere clustered around a smartphone
what were they looking up?
>>
>>543998008
saarlinks hidden objective is filling up the usefull orbits with US satelites
>>
>>543997746
It's only for people who live in remote areas or a buddy who knew from Philippines buys Starlink dishes hook up thousands of people on one dish they're a semi-internet provider now.
>>
>>543997746
It's satellite internet so it's not better or cheaper than everything else. It's objectively worse than hardline options available in most areas and it's more expensive. It's only worthwhile if you live in an area without existing lines like in the mountains.
>>
why would i use that over fibreoptic if i have access to one
>>
>>543999242
satelite based internet has shorter signal paths than ground based internet

>>543999583
>what were they looking up?
Wikipedia, obv.

I'm flatly amazed that that file is still on there for almost 20 years.

That's kind of mathematically impossible, Anon.

theres even a labeled version:

Yeah, ngl, I would lick that until she passed out and smothered me.

There's even bestiality artwork on Wikipedia, mostly really old stuff to show that it's been a part of human culture since ancient times but still.
