A lot of people don’t understand that sport as part of education is part of the classical Western education. The reason we have collegiate sports teams is because it was understand that an education should include not just purely intellectual scholarship in the liberal arts and sciences, but also in athletics, performing arts, and visual arts. The point is to create a man who can write a research paper or a poem, perform in a play, throw a javelin, and make a painting, a well-rounded cultured and competent individual. It’s the same logic that led Plato to include music theory in his education. Sports are part of what made Westerners hyper-competent, and the only problem with them today is the mass commercialization of them. Collegiate sports have become less a part of education and more show business.
