Can’t wait for trucking to be automated with these funny looking modern vehicles that don't get tired, don’t bitch and moan and don’t pollute.

Hope there’s a million unemployed MAGA truckers by 2035. I’m sure President Vance will help you.

Still not winter tested moron.
>>

I feel like the only way this will work is if they build a 3 lane self driving only highway that goes through the entire country

Someone's out of touch. There's going to be more of you unemployed, Manjeet

I have no skin in this game I just don't think you can mix self driving and regular drivers if you want this shit to work it needs to segregate

>>
>>544110430
They should uproot all the trains and convert them into automated truck highways you could even transport people on them the way trains do

Interesting.

>>

Yeah, they would shitcan them the moment accidents reached half the level of human truck drivers.
Dedicated lanes removes the unpredictability of the human variable, but at that point, you may as well use a railway.

The benefit here is the system is completely automated though and with every truck being able to communicate with each other you have less of a chance for delays

An automated train is easier than an automated truck, no chance of something crashing into it.
>>
>>544111082
see
>>544111067

>>544111154
I disagree because the truck would be able to go directly to it's warehouse and would not need to stop and unload and hold up trucks behind them
>>
>>544111154
If you put as many trains on the tracks as there are trucks on the road, trains would be crashing into each other non-stop.
>>
>>544110112
So, a train?
>>
>>544110944
True.
It's hard to believe a more modular railway system hasn't emerged in the past hundred years, considering a tractor trailer can only haul around a quarter of the weight of a railcar.
I do see trailers loaded on flatbed cars occasionally though.
>>
>>544110718
Rail freight in the USA is the most economical way to transport anything except people long distances.
>>
>>544111005
It’s mostly brown foreigners that can’t read actually, white trash is the minority, hopefully these electric trucks take all there jobs!
>>
>>544111265
You wouldnt need anywhere near as many trains as trucks.
Trains are bigger than trucks.
>>
>>544111313
No because it is automated and doesn't stop at stops slowing down everything behind it. They just get off at an exit and drive directly to their warehouses

>>544111379
and this would be even more economical and efficient and can include people

What a disingenuous faggot you are. Truckers try to do those things but OSHA doesn't allow them to. Obviously they would make a lot more money if you would just let them chug energy drinks and drive 24 hours straight, so obviously that's what all of them would love to do, but it's a safety hazard for everyone else so OSHA stepped in and now you get three strikes and you'll never drive for any company again.

>>
>>544111457
But you're going to need more trains if you move away from trucks. This is not a good thing when everything about trains make it harder for them to brake in the event that something goes wrong. They travel at high speeds, have low friction with the track and have huge amounts of mass and on top of it they can't just instantly change tracks even if you have multiple ones side by side. You'd need to build out rail infrastructure a huge amount for it to actually work. On top of all of this, you don't even get some big benefit from automating the trains like you do with trucks because of the size difference you mentioned. Every thing you can think of to make the trains better also makes the need to automate them less important.
>>
>>544111476
>No because it is automated and doesn't stop at stops slowing down everything behind it. They just get off at an exit and drive directly to their warehouses
There is such a thing as a rail station for unloading freight while being off of the main track.
>>
>>544111457
Here’s a crazy idea: why not both?
>>
>>544111652
Yeah.
OP is a retard. Most of what he is citing as common complaints of truckers are what has been imposed on them.
Fuel cost isn't their concern unless they are an owner operator.
>>
>>544112122
>There is such a thing as a rail station for unloading freight while being off of the main track.
So have any of you super pro train people ever road a train long distance because if you did you would understand the #1 issue with trains is delays and these aren't 20 minute delays but hours caused by issues at stations or very commonly someone not showing up to work all this would be solved with that I am proposing
>>
>>544109372
I would never go on the highway again if they removed truck rest regulations, letting anyone operate a 30 ton roadtrain with mental fatigue on public roads is pure idiocy.

Driverless road trains?
>>
>>544109372
>driveless
They are remotely controlled by Indians.
And no, this is not a racist rant. Half of the real-world AI is just a warehouse in Mumbai with 700 Indians doing computer work while they make it look like it's actually AI.

Do you guys remember the AI-powered self-service Amazon store? It was just 50 Indians watching cameras and taking notes of what you have picked up.

AI = All Indian. Can't wait for those AI trucks to drive like they drive in India. Killing 2 people per trip while they take jobs away.
>>
>>544112404

>>544111476
you are just as retarded as he is
>>
>>544112490
I was thinking more a combination of automated trains and trucks working seamlessly to distribute and deliver goods perhaps using existing rail lines and roads but desu I like yours better
>>
>>544109372
It's astounding how retarded you have to be to think that the only reason truckers don't work insane hours is because they simply don't want to.
>>
>>544112278
I'm not super pro-train.
Mainly pointing out the cost effectiveness of long-haul freight via train vs truck.
Trains suck for getting a product to its final destination.
They each have their place in industrial and consumer product shipping.

A bit off-topic anyways since OP is espousing the superiority of driverless trucks.
The cost of paying a driver(s) and loss of profit from their down-time vs investment cost for driverless tech and maintenance is the real question.

Also, what happens when there is a mishap with a driverless truck?
If you need to pay a babysitter, you might as well just pay a driver.
Perhaps an AI "cruise control" for the interstate long hauls, with the driver taking control in high-traffic areas and inclimate conditions will be the most feasible in the near-future.
Having support staff or contractors on standby across the country for mishaps or to drive the final stretch is also option.
>>
>>544113339
It is more cost effective for there to be no "stations" but more like highway exits that each truck can get off and end at their destination and have one or two maintenance guys who cover a 100 mile span of the route
You do at least 3 lanes so there can be a fluid emergency lane if a truck gets stopped for whatever reason
You would be reducing like 50 jobs to like 2 for every 100 miles
Again I am not pro or anti truck this just seems like the next logical step in my eyes.
>>
>>544109372
Good. Truckers are fucking scum and retarded as fuck. Most of them are dumbass dysgenic illegal brownoids. Get them off the road. The world will be a lot better.
>>
>>544113614
The cost of adding and maintaining that third lane everywhere trucks need to go, though.
Damn
>>
>>544113852
how much would it cost to maintain and why is that a deal breaker considering thats smaller than US highways?
>>
Truckers and farmers are useless bitches and losers.
>>
>>544112398
I would rather have pre-2010 regulations with the 16 hour max shifts than the dopey shitskin drivers all over the place doing retarded shit on the roads now.
>>
>>544110430
>Roads are not for freight. Unfuck rail.

Yeah, a company needing sulfuric acid in California from PA can just wait 5 weeks for rail delivery. And I have bad news for ya.... The roads ARE for freight; you just have the privilege of using them for going out gay cruising.

t. Teamster.
>>
>>544113983
It costs ~$2 million to add a mile of extra lane to a rural highway, minimum. Tens of millions per mile if you take moving the adjacent infrastructure into consideration in developed areas.

Maintenance is very costly too.
Doubt it would be worth adding lanes for the sake of avoiding paying drivers and don't care enough about it to do the research and crunch the numbers myself.
>>
>>544114561
A hundred billion, to few hundred billion infrastructure project to add lanes to interstate highways alone.
The cost estimates I keep finding are wildly varying and mine doesn't consider all the caveats of adding a lane in urban and suburban areas.

Not going to happen anytime soon, if ever.

Similarly I cannot wait for the wonderful age of Road Pirate being a legitimate and easy job for at least a few years.
Can't wait for the articles crying about how much is getting stolen from driverless trucks that "don't get tired, don't bitch and moan and don't pollute.
The people who steal from them now are gonna just start taking anything mildly valuable from these loot crates.

Ahh yes, famously popular with drivers. I remember in the 90s when the drivers all got together and demanded it.
>>
>>544109372
The only reason I want automated trucking is because I'm tired of truckers doing illegal shit like trying to pass on the left when the sign says trucks stay in the right to lanes. Didn't used to be a problem, but truckers aren't majority white any more.
>>
>>544119108
It'd be a real shame if that air goes where you don't want it to go.

Trains can be automated, retard. Actually, the technology is already there (PTC & Trip Optimizer combined basically means the train drives itself), it's just regulations and union contracts blocking it.

OK where is it gonna charge, who's gonna handle it's middle of the road breakdowns, who is liable when it inevitably kills somebody, how does a battery or series of batteries manage to hold charge carrying a 40k pound load over the Rockies?

Im actually out on the road all over the country and I've seen charging stations for trucks once. But lets say we make all the trucks electric, this will require tens of thousands of charging stations at every truck stop and rest area. And there already isn't enough truck parking with the number of truckers sleeping on the shoulder every night.

It's a lovely idea but the infrastructure is not there for anything more than light local less than one day runs with light freight. You simply have no fucking clue how the industry works nor how building infrastructure works.

Leftist trucker by the way

>>544120767
More than likely, they seem to actually be able to build shit and get shit done.

the best chance of making electric trucks and self driving trucks actually work would be to create some kind of hotrail along all of the highways. Which once again is a massive infrastructural undertaking which would cost tens of billions of dollars minimum.
>>
>>544120878
tens of billions of dollars and decades of work to put in* forgot the time table of this wondrous idea.

and one more thing, odds are when or if self driving trucks are commonplace there will still be one of those awful lazy truck drivers sitting on their ass behind the wheel making 100k a year to let the truck roll down the road for at least 5-10 years.
