China doesn't NEED Taiwan. But if Xi Jinping doesn't bring it up every 6 months, the other members of the CCP will see him as weak and will start plotting to oust him. So any time you hear China talking about Taiwan, or doing military drills that look like they're preparing for an invasion, it's all for show so that Xi Jinping can show the other members that he's a tough guy and is forcing people to take sides with him on such a big issue, one which no one will disagree with him on.
