i have no special love for Russia, but OP is right. This was perhaps the most telegraphed war in history, and there were several very obvious off ramps that nobody took. The EU, US, and Ukraine wanted this war soooo badly. But most of all Ukraine. And not even most people in Ukraine, but actually a small subset of extremist, russophobic nazis and jews. Yes that's right, Alt right nazis and jews got together and said "let's kick Russia out of their old territories". And they became so obsessed with this idea, almost like a bloodlust or revenge rage, that the current result was basically unstoppable. They handed Putin this war on a platter.
