As of writing, 3 out of 5 Yandex's main data centers have been destroyed, with the two remaining being in range of Ukrainian drones and missiles.
Apart from the obvious consequences that will happen to a civilian population that has had its basic services become heavily digitalised, what effect will this have on the Russian military and their ongoing campaign against Ukraine?

This also brings up a good point about not being able to access money, as the Russians rolled out a new digital version of the Ruble, which is basically a crypto coin issued by the Bank of Russia and came online in full on the 1st September. With no access to the internet and with no physical bank records, any money currently in this form essentially just doesn't exist in the affected regions and might be gone forever.

Depends on the finance mostly, if you can fuck up enough online banking that's going to be quite the pickle when it comes to paying people to actually go fight in Ukraine
I don't know how much they use the yandex mapping services, sort of got to figure they might and it does tie into the e-commerce sector as well as if that side of Russia isn't completely borked at this point, its just a bit more fucked up

Because if they don't, and they can't get Yandex Maps working again, that could cause a lot of interesting problems.
This also applies to their military logistics travelling in country as well, so you could end up with a whole load of resupply and reinforcements trundling off in the wilderness with just enough fuel to get them where they need to be and having no room for detours. Could get pretty funny, desu.

hitting data centres is beginning to look like something with enormous potential for future terrorist groups/hybrid actors and not just as a source of affordable RAM

American Protestants love Jews, particularly Israeli Jews. There was crickets when the IDF bombed areas containing Christian churches in Gaza.

It's questionable if they are even Christians to be honest, as they tend to be Calvinist which means they believe that nothing has free-will and everything, everything, has been pre-ordained in advance, which goes against the basic principles of not just Christianity, but every Abrahamic religion.
You also have the fact that, by the book, you should never pray to good for material gains, but for the wisdom and strength to come up with ways for making them yourself. Anyone praying to God for money or for a new car is technically praying and worshipping Mammon in the name of God, which I imagine is a pretty big no-no.

Yandex uses web cralwers to discover, scan/index websites. Its a fucking search engine. Google does literally the same thing.
>>
>>544159216
Yandex also happens to be the cloud hosting provider of choice for a significant amount of Russia's home-grown IT services, like AWS or GCP is in the West.
So it's not unrealistic to think that at least some infrastructure used to run and control social media bots was hosted in the DCs that got smoked today.
>>
>>544159211
The product known as Yandex is a search engine, yes. Owned by Yandex LLC in Russia, who maintain a few of their own data centers. Much like Google, their business model is not inherently dependent on the actual search engine in this point in time and these data centers are rented out for other purposes.
Which as one can expect, would be bots and AI. Or World of Tank servers.

>I wonder if hitting google would have a similar impact over here
Google's infrastructure is distributed across more data centres and I assume they have better disaster recovery and data/service duplication than Yandex but taking a large number of them out would be a serious issue.
The biggest problem that Yandex has though is the centralisation of services, they are the main player in Russian tech and so a shit ton more areas of society get hit. For example Google is a major player in search but we also have Bing and a few others, cloud services are split between AWS, Microsoft and Google amongst others, food delivery and taxis are through Uber etc. So taking out Google would be a problem but there are other providers that can be used, Russia has a lot less capability there.
>>
>>544159270
"taking out" Google would require simultaneous strikes on like ~600 locations.

The biggest short term impact is Ukraine has knocked out Russia's bot farms, which means their abilities to meddle in foreign elections has been crippled for the time being and the timing couldn't have been planned better for Ukraine given the US midterms are in 3 weeks in a referendum on one of putin's biggest ally, trump. This is the real reason why trump is so ass blasted at Zelenskyy and is demanding his removal given trump just lost one of his biggest propaganda tools for the upcoming elections.

>>544159206
...And putin already violated the trump 'energy cease fire' by launching multiple missiles at Kyiv's thermal power plant-6 taking it offline. I'm sure trump will demand putin to step down like he's been doing with Zelenskyy.
>>
>>544159268
>is there are reason that the US would allow Russia to sell diesel other than "to help Russia"

The "deal" is for less than one days' worth of demand being delivered over several months, and there is no reason to anticipate substantially more given Russia itself is suffering diesel shortages.

Yes. We agree as to why the price of diesel is high.

The question is: Is there any reason why America would allow Russia to sell diesel other than "to help Russia"?
>>
>>544159282
First, the US isnt buying it alone. They are allowed to sell on the global market place.

Second, the amount already purchased resulted in a 5% drop in the diesel price.

>>544159287
Yes, that would definitely work because that's a systemic attack as opposed to trying to nuke hardware.
>>
>>544159275
10% is massive though and would make them a major exporter

>Transportation and logistics worth ~$100 mil (?)
>Up to 3,350 ERAM air-launched missiles and associated equipment
>Patriot system sustainment worth $300 mil
> Satellite communications worth $150 mil
etc etc

>>544159298
>Given Russia is physically unable to sell enough volume to actually bduge market prices
The single sale of 3 million tonnes of diesel resulted in a 5% decrease in the price of diesel on the global market.

>given Russia itself is suffering diesel shortages.
They have gasoline shortages, not diesel, and Russia is still producing more than they consume.

Yes, because their network is degraded so they cant get diesel to certain internal markets. Its a dispersal issue, not a supply issue.
