But in the modern era, as countries that lost wars or were colonized have regained strength, we’ve seen the rise of a form of nationalism that puts the suffering a nation has endured at the center of its national identity. You can see this in the China, Korea, Poland and Baltic states, for example. Where does this kind of victimhood nationalism ultimately lead? It doesn’t seem healthy, does it? Would you have a feeling too it could end up taking societies in some pretty strange directions?
