That makes moral sense. Wishing for material wealth is a little greedy but it doesn't mess with someone else's free will. Wishing feelings upon her does mess with free will in a profound way.

you could argue that it's selfish and egocentric, because he doesn't consider what his crush wants and just overwrites her emotions with the wish, but it's retarded to call it evil, kek
give a woman access to a wish and she'll wish for the exact same.
it's just natural to want to see your love reciprocated, and it's also natural that your love blinds you enough to see what such a wish would mean for the other side.

People are really fucking stupid with their interpretations of this.
Its not the wish thats evil, its the fact that he clearly didnt actually care about her as evidenced by the revelation that he actually knew very little about her.
He desired her as an object and not as a person.
He was never really in love with her, he was only in love with the version of her he created in his mind.
He could see clearly that she was suffering, but he didnt actually care about her or how his actions affected her, he just wanted her to satisfy him.
Thats not love, thats possessiveness and lust.
True love means caring about someone else as a person and wanting what's best for them, not what's best for you.
The failure to understand this is why you are an incel.
You are an incel because you are scared of women and you are scared of women because you dont understand them and you dont understand them because you dont actually respect them or care about them.
If you only see women as objects to satisfy your wants and desires then you will be very confused when they start acting according to their own will.
This is why so many of you get attached to "2D" women, because they are simply caricatures of real women.
They have the face and body you desire, and maybe a few feminine mannerisms to catch your attention, but in basically every case they are shallow empty creatures with no goals or motivations.
The single driving personality trait of every female anime character in male-oriented anine is their single-minded desire for the male self-insert character.

Finding a romantic partner isnt actually that hard, you just need have enough empathy to care about somebody other than yourself.
Women are not that complicated but they will remain a mystery to you because you refuse to see them as people and instead see them only as sex objects.
In other words, you put the pussy on a pedestal.

You may now seethe at me and prove me right.

some movie called Crush or something. About a virgin getting laid.
>>
>>544204844
The evil in the wish lies in its selfishness.
He overwrite her free will with no regard for how it would affect her.
He could have instead wished for "I wish Nikki and I could live happily together forever" and that would have been fine.
Here's another one, he could have wished "I hope all of nikki's dreams come true".
If she had actually liked him as was kinda implied then one of her dreams would be to be with him.

People get the message of this movie so wrong its pathetic.
Its not about how men are bad, or relationships are bad, or the patriarchy, or rape, or any other such bullshit.
This movie is quite simply about the evil of selfishness and its consequences.
This should be obvious, since the plot is a repeat of a trope thats almost as old as storytelling: be careful what you wish for.
There are countless stories like this and they always carry the same miral message: beware the destructive power of greed.
>>
>>544206373
I mean they already made a horror movie where the "horror" is just an empty room
>>
>>544204905
This is correct.
It is not evil to want to be loved.
It is evil to prioritize that desire over what's best for someone else.
Thats why this movie is a cautionary tale about greed.
>>
The nigger literally just wished for his crush to love him back and he got fucking monkey pawed.

>>
>>544206501
So he worded his wish poorly and the genie, no wait monkey paw, no wait magic stick technically granted it to him with terrible unforeseen consequences.
The movies message is far simpler than any of that bullshit. Consult a lawyer before making your wish.

>>
>>544206626

>>
>>544206756
Oy very

But yes, its actually a very simple movie with a simple premise and a simple message.
Things dont need to be complex to be good.
The movie has been so successful simply because the plot is coherent, the camerawork is solid, the acting is believable, and most importantly the story speaks to something fundamental about the human condition.
Its not a post-modernist (woke) moral sermon, its simply a commentary on normal human behaviors and the dangers of immorality.
Bear's mistake is committing the cardinal sins of lust and greed.
There's also an argument that he is guilty of sloth, as he chose an easy solution instead of taking the hard option of being a man, confessing his feelings, and risking rejection.
The movie is very trad if you understand what that actually means.
>>
>>544207127
No, he didnt ask to cancel the wish.
He only asked to alter it.
This is important because it shows that he knows there is something wrong, but he didnt want to give up on the core aspect of his wish, he wanted to keep her.
Again, total disregard for her wellbeing and instead solely focusing on what he wanted.

It's about being careful what you wish for. You even said in your previous post if he worded it differently it would have worked out fine.

Yeah, I think he didnt want to make it a full-blown djinn story but its clear he did.
The possession aspects of this story are pretty blatant and you have to do some mental gymnastics to argue otherwise.
I think it works fine for what it is and i think it accomplishes what he was going for in terms of the horror beats.
If he had wanted to steer away from the possession aspect then he should have made things more subtle.
He should have had Nikki stay more normal for longer and instead portray her as slowly developing this all-consuming stalker "obsession" with bear that ultimately leads to the climax of the movie.
He could have had her slowly show more interest in Bear, have her ask him out and initiate the relationship.
Then, the twist for the movie could be that Bear realizes she isnt who he thought she was and he falls out of love with her.
This could have let him still explore the idea of loving a person vs loving the idea of a person.
Act 2 could be about him starting to develop a real relationship with the Asian chick, causing Nikki to go into her downward spiral.
This could let the tail end of the movie stay more or less the same, beginning with her murder of the Asian.
Curry didnt do that though because its clear he wanted to go with a more conventional horror movie and wanted to lean into the creepyness aspect to sell the story.
This requires Nikki to act very erratic which can really only be explained through some sort of possession.
I have seen some arguments that her "possession" is like the way people act differently when under the influence of a drug, but I dont think that explains just how extreme her actions are, or her moments of lucidity where its clear the "real" Nikki is being suppressed in some way.

Where the fuck did you get that from? I literally said he worded his wish poorly and the djinn fucked him over for it. That's it. That's all there is to this movie.
You can sit there and theorize about the things he should/could have done and the ethical implications behind them. You can analyze motivations and intentions until the fucking cows come home and milk themselves. You can agonize over what these things say about his or anyone elses character but none of that fucking matters.
This movie is just a dumb nigger made a dumb nigger wish and he died for it al la monkey paw. That's fucking it. Stop trying to dress it up like a janitor calling himself a sanitation engineer so you can appeal to tiktok feminists.

So your argument is that there is absolutely no moral statements in this movie whatsoever? Everything that happens is just arbitrary and random?
You might actually be a brain dead nigger.
Why are you even in this thread if you think this movie is so shallow and empty?
Why do you care about it if it has nothing to say?
>>
>>544210680
He obviously stole it from the Simpsons, which stole it from outer limits, which stole it from twilight zone, which stole it from......
There's nothing wrong with retelling this story. Obviously it happens every generation or so because there is something about the story that speaks to people.
Its simple, but a story being simple doesnt mean that it cant be meaningful.
Obviously this story resonates with people or this movie wouldnt have been successful and we wouldnt constantly be retelling it over and over again.
I agree though that him trying to deny thats what hes doing is retarded.
>>
>>544210265
>says things it doesn't
I mean it outright postulates that he makes a mistake and the only way to fix it is for him to kill himself?

I don't have to watch the slop to know it's slop. If the writer had said "yes the macguffin device is a monkey's paw and is evil let the buyer beware" like in Gremlins, the cute Mogwai is itself dangerous, then fine, that's normal.
But he denies that and says that the wish itself (for reciprocated feelings) is evil, even though the guy doesn't believe the macguffin has any actual power.
It does have power, and then the only way to fix it is for him to kill himself.
You can't grasp why that's bad feminist fantasy? That the ultimate solution for a guy who chickened out or wasn't up to her standards is to kill himself?
Because foids will say the "correct" wish was for him to have himself changed so that she'd choose to love him. Not getting that they're asking for the same thing, for someone's "self" to be stripped away from them and replaced with a doppleganger in their place. It's simply flipping which party gets swapped.
That's Aladdin, having to wish that he would be changed into someone he's not, a prince, so that he can have a relationship with the princess. Neither were happy with that pretense either.

That's the main part of the story that I've gotten that makes me sure to never watch it, is that the solution when he realizes he's made a mistake is "kys", and that foids and male feminists will say he's continuing to be in the wrong for not committing suicide.
>>
>>544204584
Is "love" real? Like, is it a chemical or what? When you wish for someone to love you, are you effectively rewiring their brain to release non-stop "love" chemicals when around you? Sounds kinda evil.

OK, why does it resonate with men? Because this story resonates with everyone.
I think the reason so many people here are so quick to defend bear is because they see his weakness as a reflection of their failures and cowardice.
The incel's greatest fear is that the girl he likes might actually be into him and its not feminism, but his own cowardice, that is keeping him from her.
This movie shows that clearly, whether or not the director is smart enough to see what he actually did.

It doesn't, in male dominated spaces all you see in discussion is about how women are reacting to the movie and bear's actions. Most men haven't even bothered to watch it because the gist of it is stupid. They like watching the actress and it about ends there.

This was a monkey paw movie. Be careful what you wish for was the message. That's it. Jesus christ dude, the story of a boy crying wolf isnt simple either.
All of these stories have deep underlying meaning that speaks to fundamental human nature.
THATS why we keep retelling them over and over again, because there are deep moral considerations that we feel compelled to continuously contemplate

>durrrr, just be careful what you wish for, like its simple dude.
Why, faggot?
Why do we need to be careful what we wish for?
What wishes might have unintended consequences?
Unintended consequences for who? Ourselves or others?
A "wish" is just an allegorical dtand-in for power.
So being careful what you wish for is equivalent to the need to be careful about how you wield the power to influence the world.
There are enormous moral and philosophical implications to that.
You are an actual retard gorilla nigger.

Yes, which is different from the initial assertion you keep dodging that the film claims he should kill himself because she wasnt into him.

A movie about the ironic consequences of TikTok witchcraft would be fun if it could ever be made
>A bunch of different crystal loving hoes all cast spells to make Chad commit to them
>They take effect at different times causing weird, but also increasingly dark Three's Company style shenanigans
>At about the half way mark realize they're all magically fighting to be part of a harem and start hexing competing witches
>Simultaneously Chad becomes an obnoxious simp and they lose attraction to him, but they have trouble stopping or reversing the spells
>At some point they all realize they're pregnant
>Climax is them simultaneously doing homebrew abortions as catalysts for a counterspell the love enchantment(s)
>It works, Chad either becomes gay or a volcel 40k hobbyist

the entire thread is the basis of the writer claiming it was NOT a Monkey's paw, just the dude's wish itself was evil, despite requiring a supernatural macguffin to generate the scenario, and then the only option out of the mistake, triggered by not believing in the macguffin in the first place, is suicide.
>>
>>544212695
This, the reason there is even a discussion to be had is because the movie doesnt present any character as being purely good or evil.
The people claiming that the movie asserts bear's wish is evil are the incel losers trying to paint a narrative of him being a victim and this being some feminist empowerment film which it clearly isnt.
All bear had to do to avoid all of it was just ask her out.
The movie is just as much about the consequences of being a fucking pussy as it is about "be careful what you wish for".
The people trying to simplify the movie are doing so because they sympathize with bear and want to believe he is a victim because they see themselves as victims.
Its fucking pathetic.

Why is that a problem?
The incel narrative, which was stated explicitly in this thread, is that the movie asserts he needs to kill himself because she doesnt like him.
Thats not the claim of the movie at all.
She very clearly WAS into him.
It was his own cowardice that got him in the situation.
Now, you can argue that suicide being the only way out is a bit extreme, thats a fair argument to make.
Personally, I dont have a problem with it because to me I read it as a heroic sacrifice.
Extreme? Maybe, but lots of older stories are equally if not more extreme.
If you have a problem with this as the solution the film offers, then maybe offer some actual criticism and propose an alternative structure instead of just rejecting the entire thing as feminist bullshit.

He asked if he could cancel the wish but was told the only way out was through his death. Because no sane person would choose to kill themselves as their first option, he tried to find a way to "make it work". Mind you, the guy he called about the wish also told him that the love she feels is real.

>>
>>544213531
there are 3 problems overall:
1. That the writer claims it's not a monkey's paw, but that the character's actual desire (for reciprocated feelings) is the problem. It's not presented that the writer had the toy be cursed, malevolent, or that his wish was just badly worded... but rather that his underlying desire: for reciprocated feelings, is evil.
- if the writer had said that the toy was cursed or malevolent, then it's a story like Gremlins "let the buyer beware"
- if the writer had said that his wish was worded improperly, IE as people have pointed out in this thread, what if he'd wished for material wealth but not been careful with his wording, literally crushed by a billion dollars of gold bars. Then that's a "be careful what you wish for" story.
But the writer did not do that, he has said, and doubled down on the concept that the underlying desire, for reciprocated feelings, is the problem and source of horror.
2. The premise requires the character not believing the object has any power and making daydream level wish thinking there's no way it'll come true anyway so might as well carelessly wish for something unrealistic.
-If he'd believed the object actually had actual power, he'd probably be more careful with how he worded it at the very least. The unwritten, but intended clause in any daydream like wish for a particular person to love you is that they'd freely CHOOSE to love you. Love that is coerced, forced, or gotten by way of deception is meaningless. It only means something if the other person freely chooses it. That's implied in any kind of daydream.
3. When he realizes it went wrong and he wants to fix it, he's given suicide as the only way to fix it. Giving him basically a no win scenario. This isn't a heroic death to save someone else, this is a calculated decision to cease existing.
if a man goes into a burning building to save someone else heroically, he is RISKING himself, but not necessarily committing suicide.
>>
>>544214021

that many people going to see it doesn't mean they all enjoyed it, nor does it mean it is a great film. People get caught up in word of mouth and fear of missing out all the time. It became a happening. Most of the time those things come and go with no real impact. Time will tell what happens with this film in this regard. People will listen to bad music just to not appear to be different or strange, same goes with watching films. It has not standing with the quality of the product itself.
>>
>>544214373
It's a lot, for a horror film.
Actual popularity looks like a Billion dollars in 2020 money.
So it's a niche movie that made good against it's budget which was very cheap.
That does not mean the movie is extremely popular, because it isn't, it's still niche.
>>
>>544214819
major point here.
just going to see it doesn't mean the film resonated with them.
it just means they took a chance at a new movie. They might know very little about it going to see it. I've gone to see movies and been disappointed before. My money still counts to its box office return.
>>
My interpretation of the film is that the wish isn't inherently evil. It's just that due to how it works in-universe, and perhaps due to how the wisher pictured it himself, there was no non-demented way to do it. And then when it's clearly going wrong, and she is clearly not okay, and the real chick breaks through every now and then, he doesn't really care. All he cares about is that it's not working for him. Which also plays into the idea that perhaps how he pictured it is part of the corruption of the wish.

I also think maybe the idea is that the entity that possessed her came from his own mind/soul/whatever, and that's why it says that thing about the cat right at the start.

OK, in that sense the writer is right (but it clearly is a monkey's paw as evidenced by the first scene with the thing where the store owner tells Bear that these things are ruining people's lives but he buys it anyway).
I dont think the movie claims that the wish itself is evil (the director may have said that, if so hes a retard and thats not what he put in his movie).
What is evil is the selfishness and cowardice Bear demonstrates throughout the movie.
He demonstrates this at many points.
The clearest demonstration of this might be towards the end when he wants to modify the wish instead of canceling it.
He very clearly knows she is being possessed and acting against her will at this point, but he is OK with it so long as he gets to keep being with her.
Thats fucking evil.

Sure, I agree completely. His initial intentions were harmless and pure, thats not what makes him a bad guy.
What makes him a bad guy is how he chooses to deal with the situation, particularly once it becomes clear that he isnt with the real Nicki and he decides he doesnt actually care.

Finally, someone gets it. A hundred such movies came out but they didn't find the perfect storm of modernity behind them

I like your film but I like the film they actually made too. The film they made is very much about Bear, and the selfishness of his desire. Each time the chick gets worse, or more clearly communicates basically that this is all happening against her will, he does nothing, or tries to make it work. He wants it so badly he does not care what happens to her (or himself). Yours doesn't sound like it would have that at all.

Sure, but there are plenty other stories where the heroic sacrifice is explicitly a choice to die.
A soldier throwing himself on a grenade comes to mind.
On the point of trying to "fix it", 1) he doesnt try to undo the wish, he tries to "modify" it.
The movie doesnt really tell us exactly what he means by that, but at this point he knows pretty explicitly that Nikki is being possessed.
Its reasonable for him to assume that if all he did was "modify" the wish she would still be possessed.
2) suicide being the only way to undo the wish may be extreme, but I think the point is that it needs to be a very high cost to fix the mistake.
Sometimes simple mistakes have very severe consequences.
Thats part of the depth contained in the whole "be careful what you wish for" trope.
That said, I think its fair to criticize that as being unfair, but in that case I ask what would be a fair sacrifice to make to make up for his mistake?
I think something like her forgetting everything about him and him being forced to live knowing he lost his chance for the one thing he wanted might be a fair cost.
Either way, it needs to be severe and permanent otherwise the core idea of "be careful what you wish for" doesnt really land.
Why be careful if there are no consequences?

but when the solution presented is just "kys" that's a dead end. That's not a solution. If he could buy another macguffin and just undo the wish completely, but refused to, you'd have a point.
If there was a way presented in which he could exorcize the demon out of her but the resulting trauma would lead her to hate him and never want to see him again and he chose not to do that, you'd have a point.
If the solution was he had to do something dangerous (like maybe attacking whatever witch or evil created the damn thing) that RISKED his personal safety, and he chose not to do it, you might have a point.

But the solution is only "kys", which is a non solution, guaranteeing your own non existence from your perspective, has no benefits. She'd go back to normal.. and you'd not exist to even verify that's what happened.

>The clearest demonstration of this might be towards the end when he wants to modify the wish instead of canceling it.
That isn't that close to the end. I think he does far worse after this. Like walk away when the real girl that he was supposed to be in love with talks to him when the entity is sleeping.

And I think modifying the wish is really not that crazy either. Maybe he thinks he phrased it badly. We as viewers don't really understand what went wrong and he will understand it even less. Maybe his amendment will be "I want it to be the real her" or "I want her to be truly happy too". He is kinda stupid so he probably would have said "I want her to stop doing freaky shit" or something, but we don't know.

No, we should and are having a thread about what is actually presented in the fucking movie, but I can understand why that might be difficult if you never bothered to watch the fucking thing.

Pirate it faggot, I did.

it's what the writer intended to convey that I have a problem with, the writer.

You must actually be autistic.
She asked him point fucking blank at the start of the movie if he liked her

The original argument was that the film only appealed to women which i have thoroughly destroyed.
You may not like that the movie was popular and successful, but that doesnt change the fact that it was.

Very few movies make over a billion dollars even in today's money.
You can count the number of billion dollar movies released this year on one hand.

I agree. Viewers casually suggesting he should have killed himself. Do you know how hard that is? Even suicidal people don't always emotionally succeed at it.

But then we find out he CAN just get someone else to undo the wish. That seems like a perfectly viable solution. Maybe if he had tried it sooner.

To me the film is about Bear and his attitude.

People usually dont go to see movies they arent interested in, and movies that dont resonate with people but have inflated hype will usually have a big opening and then drop off after the first week.
This movie released mo the ago and people are still talking about it.
It resonated with people, stop coping.

I turned down a chick who had been divorced. She wasn't ugly, did yoga every day and was trying to stay fit. But she was literally a blonde chick with rich parents who fucked a nigger who then cheated on her. I was like no way bro. She would seethe about how men "can't be picky about who they date". I think about that because I feel like the people who post the stupid shit in OP would probably agree with her that I was mean for being disinterested in a whore.

It's always like that with women now- she wants to be a whore until she's ready to find a serious guy, then it's a problem, but it's also a problem if non-chad/nigger men are into her when she's being a whore.

Luckily it was a temp job so I was done after a few months.

>And then when it's clearly going wrong, and she is clearly not okay, and the real chick breaks through every now and then, he doesn't really care
This.

The desire to be loved isnt the problem, its the selfish way he tried to cling to her after knowing she was suffering.
The movie is not ambiguous about this at all.

I think you just dont like the idea that sometimes the consequences of making a mistake is death.
I agree its possibly a bit extreme in this specific story, but I dont think its entirely unreasonable and the cold fact of reality is that sometimes in real life the consequence of making a stupid mistake is that you die.
>>
>>544215879
people are talking about it as CONTROVERSY not universal acclaim and praise.
there's a difference.

>he needed to kill himself because magic became real all of a sudden without any prior warning
>>
>>544215967
I would add it is not even possible for the film to be "about" the wish. The rules of the magic system are arbitrary, and unknown to all characters as well as the audience. The film is about what Bear does in the aftermath of a wish gone wrong.
>>
>>544216077
I don't think you grasp the difference between "I did something stupid and accidentally died" and "I did something stupid and the only way to fix it is to deliberately kill myself"

it's the difference I'm trying to demonstrate by referring to a scenario of a man running into a burning building to save his family. He is RISKING himself, it might result in his death, but he is hoping he survives, believing that if he does not, his wife and kids GUARANTEED will die.
vs "you fucked up, there is no solution except for you to go neck yourself, now go buy a rope and a stool and plan out your own death and execute it by your own hands deliberately.

The way your crush will love you back is -with- material wealth. This isn't rocket science.

She's literally warm traffic here.
>>
>>544215849
I think you are missing the point about true love.
One of the main ideas in the movie is that things go so horribly wrong because he was never actually in love with her to begin with, he only thought he was but in truth he didnt even really know anything about her.
If his love for her had been true love, then he should have been willing to die for her, which he ultimately does at the end.
There's also a story in there about overcoming his cowardice.
It was his cowardice that made him fail to confess his feelings at the start.
By failing to overcome that relatively small fear he put himself in a much more severe circumstance where the only way out was to overcome the fear of death and make the ultimate sacrifice to save the woman he loved.
It became clear that his mistake had destroyed any potential he had for being with her in a real way and on that moment the only noble thing left to do is to sacrifice himself to save her.
Maybe there was actually some other way in-universe, but in the story we got, by the time we get to the end she is so far gone that this is really the only option left
>>
>>544216482
there is no nobility there foid.
