This is a total PC simulation even including hard drive speed. They took this from you. This was 32 years ago. Now imagine how bloated the AI clone of this will be when MS realizes this is what we always needed and wanted.
>>
DOS as you know, takes less time to load than it takes your PC to enumerate in the BIOS.
>>
>ya don't know what you lost if you never had it

I have a two CNC machines that are windows 2000 with original 2.5" spinners, I forget the ram but it's low like 256mb or less. both boot faster than the cad machine that is on NVME ssds with 128gb of ram. it all comes down to the OS bloat.
>>
linux boots fast and is much better than windows 95 (except maybe for familiarity)

on the right hardware it may be sub-3s and people tweaked it to be faster than that of course but even without chasing boot times it's quite fast
>>
Word was as expensive as the OS back then.
>>
>>544292875

I don't want to go back 32 years ago. AI has been the best thing to happen.
>>
Does windows not open quick anymore? I remember when ssds first became a thing 15 years ago and windows 7 would take about as long as OPs webm to boot.
>>
>>544292875
Mine boots faster and its piece of shit windows 11.
>>
A lot of pc bloat is failsafes. Unironically jeet code. All just to simulate 3D spaces using visual illusions and le pretty colors.
Pretty grim but whites chose this timeline of computers and still fund it massively ratio wise.
>>
>>544292875
You can still boot this fast with the right OS. Windows 11 is total jeetware slop. I have a Ryzen mini PC with Batocera on it that I keep hooked up to my living room TV and pretend it's a gaming console. It boots up in like 5 seconds, about the same as a GameCube or PS2 did back in the day.
>>
>>544292875
And if Windows worked that way today, that's how long it would take for your computer to get a virus
>>
>>544294264
Yeah my Linux laptop boots in like 6 seconds and LibreOffice or whatever only takes a couple seconds to open.
Half of that 6 second boot time is bios splash screen POST

actual windows installations of current windows 11 in the wild almost never boot as fast, no

there's also a high chance even just device drivers with default installation settings introduced multiple gigabytes of bloatware on their own and added a relative zoo of processes that run on startup. and other shit. so often it's even worse in reality.

it's really bad

this is bullshit. I lived through those times and Windows was never known for booting fast or being reliable, in fact it was known for being slow and things didn't get better till Windows XP. Eventually MS got scared enough they started paying manufacturers to not put Linux on their PC's and if they did they'd block them from using Windows.

Everyone saying it was slower than this is wrong. This is 86box, it emulates the entire computer. That's the point that differentiates it from a regular virtual machine. It doesn't run anything faster than the hardware you are emulating, period. I encourage you all to try it. Get your iso's from winworld and the archive.
The reason you think that it was slower back then is because waiting on a computer to load anything was still a new experience. You've been conditioned to wait on your computer to load for 30 years since then, no matter how fast it got you always have to wait on it. Along the way it got even slower than it used to be, but you're used to it and back then you weren't. To top it off you were also a lot younger, makes things feel slower even still. Windows 95 also felt sluggish compared to dos machines that came before it.
>>
>>544292875
Not sure if OP is a boomer retard or a zoomer retard

If you're old enough to have used Windows 95 you know how limited those programs are
If you're young enough to not have used them, you would know that you get similar speeds with a proper NVMe SSD

OP's probably just a timeless retard
>>
>>544301162
>It all went down hill after 98 SE
>The great decline
I had 98SE down to a science, and could wipe the hard drive and fresh install with exactly what I wanted and didn;t want, then lock the boot menu. All my data was stored and went right over. XP was a more then acceptable compromise and ran more software. I STILL run (virtually, but still) the same audio software, it does all i need to do.
>>
>>544301593
>If you're old enough to have used Windows 95 you know how limited those programs are

Windows 95 as an OS did 95% of the things that actually matter that windows 11 can do. The hardware was limited but the code was actually efficient. Today it's all spaghetti code bloat.

>>544301831
You can boot and use windows 95 on 4mb of ram and a 16mhz 386sx cpu from the 80s. It's insane how efficient it was compared to the shit we have now. Op's video is an mmx 166mhz with 32mb of ram. That runs windows 95 very comfortably and those are period correct specs for an entry to mid level pc of that time.

My fastest booting system i ever had was a tiny pentium M laptop on a compactFlash card.
< 1.3 seconds from grub to a login shell.

It was whacky buildroot setup. Basically just a very slim kernel + an extremely small "init system" (bash script to bring up /dev/ and some other junk.
I used it to play quake and ssh into my real machines during college in the late 2010s.

I set it up because back then i actually had time to experiment with BS like that, and i wanted to have the most minimal "note taking" setup that i could come up with.

Hearing those loud ass hard drives spin and rattle in the school computers and waiting like 12 minutes from pressing the power button to their out-of-date bloated asses to finally log in. Really takes me back.
XP was something else. It COULD be fast and svelte and amazing... but usually it ended up a turd with 30 toolbars, 4 different antiviruses, 10 different random ass apps starting at boot.

Windows was only "fast" when it was a fresh installation. And even then many out-of-the-box linux installs were faster.

>>544301916
It wasn’t really DOS, stop saying it. It shipped with DOS and you could dual boot to DOS by default. But the system was running on a full 32-bit hybrid kernel called Virtual Machine Manager VMM32.VXD and that’s were all the high performance drivers would run. This is lost technology but it was doing great and predates modern trends. The windowing system itself was running in a virtual machine

Back then "virtual machine" usually meant just virtualized memory and context switching. An actual "virtual machine" would've required software emulation back then.

That term has evolved a bit since the mid 90s.
But yeah. It was a hell of a lot different from DOS.

Yea it did. This emulated machine if it were real with that exact installation would boot like that. If 86box is any faster it's because it runs the emulated hardware best case scenario speeds (the exact speed it's intended to run). That difference in speed isn't worth mentioning.

No they're not fake and gay lol.
Your modern hardware running the emulator does not run the emulated hardware any faster than it's meant to run. This is not a virtual machine. This is not even dosbox. This is 86box, a true and accurate emulator. You can learn all about it yourself.

>MMX tech wasnt even included in win95 nigger

Regular pentium which isn't that different was released before windows 95 was out. The slowest pentium (a 75mhz) was almost tied with the absolute fastest 486dx variant there was. 90mhz is a far more likely cpu someone had though, 75 was not too common. Most people ran windows 95 on a pentium, pentium mmx, or pentium 2 or 3 (if they didn't want to use windows 98).
>>
>>544303554
Are you taking the piss? The Pentium 166MMX wasnt even fucking introduced until the year after Windows 95 came out, and it was around $500 6 months afters its release for the processor alone, you'd be looking at a $1,800+ price tag on a PC that was using one in 1996 or 1997 until the Pentium 200 MMX came out.

I don't know what to tell you other than you're just wrong. This machine, fresh install, this is how it would boot windows 95. Does that mean your computer illiterate dad's windows 95 machine that had windows 95 put on it two years ago seemed to boot this fast to you when you were younger? Of course not. But with 86box you could emulate your dad's machine as well, theoretically anyway you'd need an exact hdd image.

2010 I was running win 95 playing cs 1.6 on steam with a p3 800mhz, an amd 9200 pci, and either 128 or 256 mb ram, cant remember that one. 640x480 low settings but still over 30 fps. This tracks, it would fucking take like a day to defrag the drive but it was pretty playable.

Then don’t you remember the scratching noises of the swap file on disk each time you moved the mouse? Don’t you remember the abhorrent music that was playing while the whole thing was still half loaded? Don’t you remember that any software you would install was trying to take over your pc completely installing startup tray applets and useless trashy splash screens? And that uninstalling said app wouldn’t restore the previous state by any measure. Don’t you remember that an antivirus was obligatory, but all of them were bloated? somewhere around 1080TI release hardware and software niggers realized that need for new hardware is nonexistent.

Thats why games looks same or worse than 15 years ago and run 10x slower
Its by design, jeet codemonkeys or white codemonkeys making it., doesnt matter, they all get cash under desk from jewvidia shintel and scamd to make their shit as bloated as possible
>>
>>544304328
I remember. The thread is about spaghetti code and bloat though. We shouldn't need to wait on our computers anymore. Your cpu is probably 1000x faster than an mmx 166. You probably have 16-32gb of ram, not 32mb.
>>

I’m very satisfied by Windows 11 nowadays. They did a great job with the terminal, in particular and everything (a part updates) run smoothly

I had a Pentium 110Mhz with 16 mb of ram back then. That was very expensive for my father and barely usable for me

This applies to all software. People back in the day HAD to make it small, efficient and fast because of the hardware. So something like Windows 95 didn't have all the BS modern Windows has because it literally couldn't afford to. Now everything is a webapp coded in jeethon/jeetscript by jeets or LLMs. People don't care about the quality anymore.
>>
>>544304571
True that's why old hardware and software is so much more interesting.
>>
>>544292875
can't it be redone? not with vibe coding but is there anyone on earth capable of copying old tech with new techniques?

some guy is selling an iPod breadboard so you can connect to Bluetooth and stuff.

shouldn't revisiting old tech be simple? what's stopping someone from creating a bootleg windows 95 but that works with modern tech?
no bloat or spyware. right before you get murdered you'd be a hero because that's obviously what everyone wants.

so why not
>>
>>544304850
Just run the old software, what's so tough about that?
>>
>>544304850
Building a kernel and user space programs is a monumental task that can't really be done by a single person (there are some exceptional people like Terry Davis, but that's like one in a generation). Other thing is tech debt, ie. most programs are made for either Windows or Linux. Then there are proprietary drivers

better to just compare something like visual studio to Windows XP visual studio. With min requirements it loads in like 2 seconds, uses 1% the RAM, and it's practically the exact same program as today but just with no telemetry or jeetware bloat.

as someone still stuck on wangblows 7 for various reasons running old software is fine if you don't want to connect to the internet. most modern websites flat out won't work if you try to open them with netscape navigator and half of them will break anyway even with a modern, but non-jewgled browser like pale moon. jewgle uses their cronies at cloudflare to exclude non-chrome or chrome-like browsers from the internet, and they made it so you need a modern os to use chrome.

There used to be a setting you could change to speed up loading, because Windows had a built-in default display time for the logo. Like 30 sec or something, I don't remember. I want to say you had to add something to the autoconfig.bat, but this was so long ago, I don't remember anymore.

I still run Win 7, some of my software is like 20 years old. It still works fine for all of my daily purposes, just I wouldn't be able to play the fancier games of now. I only ever see tinker trannies seething about this. We have 2026 maybe you should have upgraded your 4GB ram stick a long time ago.
I have win 11 and deleted all the AI nonsense and it works great, I have 16gb ram currently and with gaming it never goes above that no matter what I play.
What I do think is bad is that win 11 feels like it's just a new layer of win put over an old windows. They should start from scratch instead of putting more and more shit on top of the old.

If Linux wasn't so retarded and had actual support then I would change too but where even start? There are trillion different versions and everyone says a different one is the right one. Why can't they make a user friendly distro for once where everything just works and can be used for normal users who barely know anything about PCs?
They usually just say 'works on my PC' and for basic functions you should just ask AI or reddit.

>>
>>544308138
there is sometimes a little tinkering, but once you've got it working it works, so it's not endless
some games you simply can't play, some games run smoother and faster, some games have a linux native version
most things I've tried just run with no effort
you can check compatibility on:
https://www.protondb.com/

it would be a lie to say there aren't drawbacks, and there is tinkering, but the point is that Linux actually puts you in control of your own machine moreso than a corporate OS does, especially with things like NixOS where you're essentially speccing out your own custom operating system, so there's nothing you don't want, and absolutely everything is to your taste - you can even set up your spec ('flake') to recognise which of your computers it's on, customising what gets installed / updated based on that
declarative, automated, reproducible, and European - it feels like the future
I would highly recommend at least dabbling with it on one of your machines

>Playing games became easier they said when you play over steam but what about all the cracked games? They surely won't work so easy if at all right?
you can use the exact same Steam Runtime Tools and Steam Linux Runtime in a standalone mode with things like 'umu-launcher'
and you've also got 'Lutris' which is very much like Steam but for non-Steam games, and has simple installers for even obscure things like the PC port of Perfect Dark
some people prefer 'Bottles' because it offers more control, but doesn't have a 'library' feel AFAIK
you just add what you want to your flake like this:

programs.steam.enable = true;
environment.systemPackages = with pkgs; [
umu-launcher
lutris
bottles
pcsx2
dolphin
];

update, and it's magically on your system with a restart
try it - it's free!
>>
>>544309066
>update, and it's magically on your system with a restart
sorry, that's *without* a restart
you can rebuild a large portion of your operating system live and switch over instantly
>>
>>544292875
That is booting on modern hardware still. 95 took a couple of minutes to boot back then at the best. Most people would start it and go do other things. As a kid I would boot it when I got home from school. By time I had shoes and socks off, backpack put up and had talked with parents about my day and got back then it almost was done booting.
But my parents would keep getting bloatware on it. I would open IE and it would have 10 toolbars. Then my vidya was always blamed for slowing the computer down.
My current desktop can boot in 7 seconds. Half of that is bios time. If your current computer is slow just jewgle disabling hibernate and disabling fast boot. You normies probably are doubling your boot time with those.

I understand most of the things you said but what's so important about you being in total control of the system and just want plug and play? Most tests Linux gives lower fps than current win 11 so what's the real selling point if you don't give a shit that you can't configure your entire OS? My new PC is a few months old and everything worked from the start no bug or failure whatsoever. While with Linux there's is always something to do first or problems coming up many times from what the Linux users write online.

but personally I don't like being technologically-infantilised to the point that I'm trapped in a corporate walled garden and made into digital chattel, so changing a line in a config to get a game working isn't particularly daunting to me, thus there's not really an argument to not use NixOS, when most things do work of the box, and I get all the other benefits as well

286 and 386 booted faster, but that was on windows 1 and 2. 3.1 and 95 were also still dos programs so they took a long time to load. soldering the 2032 is easy- desoldering the Dallas was no fun, and pray you didnt fuck up the pins on removal or reinstall, and pray there was enough room for the disk drive to go back in. These werent towers like today. They were horizontal chassis that Compaq did not want you getting inside.

I had a 286 with a turbo button. Ran dos, windoze 3.x, 95, etc. two 5.25" floppies and a cassette. Later a 3.5", a zip drive, a jazz drive. 100 mb hdd back in the 80s. Bought Space Quest on CompuServe back in like 88.

Boot took forever and made a ton of funky noises. You have no idea.

I do not see how this is different than a lot of Lenovo laptops from the past 10 years having a locked CMOS battery in the case that was not removable.

Sometimes you have to reset it in order to clear the BIOS in order to install a different operating system I just did that earlier this year and yeah you just have to be careful. Easy money though.

Based win7 enjoyer. I still have a win7 desktop PC and it's very fast. I recently bought a laptop with win11 just because I wanted a laptop. I also do like MSFT teams for interviews and have visual studio installed so I needed a laptop. Additionally, for traveling. But win7 is super based and probably the pinnacle when it comes to speed and reliability. All the comforts of a modern OS without the bloat. I remember it's hard asf to find versions of software that run on it though. That's the only nice thing about win11 is you can download the latest of everything and it runs without having to track down which version of some program runs on win7

That will be interesting. I think it'll probably keep going due to entropy. Companies are moving server apps into Azure due to not having to constantly update the servers and fix security issue. That's what I do for a living. But Apple isn't really an option, the apple IDE xCode is unbelievably garbage. I thought MSFT sucked until I had a job fixing an apple app using xCode. Apple is so shitty that no wonder most companies run winblows. It really made me appreciate Visual Studio

Windows 7 was peak baseline operating system efficiency. I mean it allowed the user to refine the process of computing the way they wanted to and gave them the largest amount of freedom and creativity.
Everything beyond has been disaster after disaster because they have moved so far away from efficiency that they don't even pretend to conceal the bloat anymore. They just expect you to buy a 5 thousand dollar graphics card and 20 thousand dollars of ram in order to achieve high performance.

Win 11 has hundreds of processes and executables running in the background, ai probing and sensors, facial scans, voice recording, all built directly into default systems like the ones for opening Word and notepad.

>>
>>544312692
You could easily monitor what was going on within your os with win 7. Their trojans were easy to defend against, now it's impossible. Which of the hundreds of processes is being used to do things I don't want it to. What's even worse is they made it so it's not even under our control, it's constantly pinging routers and ips connected to Microsoft (located someplace in India or south Asia)

I've accepted it, we've no way to regain control of anything and the future society will be built inefficiency, scams, and cons to trick people bad is good, forever. Like a nightmare.

The market is actually moving to Azure rather than windows. But most companies still use windows for their laptops due to office 365 and teams. It is what it is. Could be worse. Try using apple for a bit. I'm not sure about linux but apple is complete garbage in every way. I had to google how to do basic shit in their stupid ide Xcode and even trying to do basic operating system stuff like going up a level isn't simple. It really made me appreciate winblows

Someone out there using AI as we speak to make a really good OS
>>
>>544313252
If I were to develop anything I would do it in a Windows 7 environment or as close to that as I could. It's the only OS you can still get a good base line reading with. You'll never achieve anything anywhere near it with Linux, it's highly inefficient and extremely tedious nonsense.
If it were any kind of app I would use c# for the framework, if I had to use 3d environment it would be an older iteration of Unity or Unreal that had cross platform working using Win 7. AI enhanced older applications look as good if not better than somethings of today and are WORLDs apart in terms of performance yet the performance costs and needs seem to keep getting exponentially worse, they've gone and transcended comically inefficient.

AI isn't actually AI. It's a large language model and it can only copy off work people already did. So you'll end up with some OS someone already created. Most likely a copy of NT

Have you ever tried to use their IDE XCode? It fucking sucks in every way compared with Visual Studio. You also can't even see the file tree within your own OS. Oh I get that you CAN use the terminal to see the file path. In winblows it's just literally right there in the explorer and always has been. Everything is ridiculously stupid in mac. Like it was designed for a child or something. And as far as not using XCode like you said... that's their IDE for coding apps bro, and it fucking sucks. You can't hover over objects to see values all the time. You can't right click to rename a file. Everything about apple sucks compared with Visual Studio. It's a slick OS but I absolutely hated it. I had a job working on apple app and it was a nightmare that never ended.

You're an uninspired creator who cant guide AI to produce what you want. AI is a like a super genius 5 year old, if you dont hold its hand and be stupid specific, it will not produce what you want. Directors like Spielberg basically do the same thing, no? Use hundreds of other people who all gained their skills and talents through other people and means (Like how AI gathers everything) and then uses all of their knowledge with his creativity to make movies. We are living in the Directors era, and if you can only produce uninspired slop, thats because you lack creativity. AI has access to all the OS ever made, once can pull all the best things from all those OS and make something new. Look at all the people using AI to emulate PS5, and now even doing more things on top of it. Blah, blah, blah conclusion. If your AI pumps out slop, its because you're a creativity void of a human.

If some rando decides to make an OS and bricks his computer then thats on them, but I assure you no one who doesnt even have a lick of knowledge about OS is going to run to their AI and start a massive OS project, the only people who will do that are probably people who can nearly build an OS themselves

little things speed up efficiency, the placement of the start menu for example. They moved it at one point because if they could attract the users eyes to the center of the screen it made them more susceptible to ads, so they began ads in the startmenu process, which btw is now a core part of the trojan operating system that every major ad company such as Google pretty much has direct access to with telemetry services. If you can disable parts of this system you free up gb's of ram. In Windows 11 they autoactivate it after an automated program pings Microsoft and sends back a result, and there's no way to stop it because it's part of the core system now.

They did an update they switched up the way images are displayed in the folder, it now takes me an extra 5 minutes to do something it took me fractions of a second to do before.
