This is at least the 4th ship in the past four days to be struck by an Iranian mine. Iran mined hormuz again with speedboats, while the US was unable to prevent it. A proper US escort operation would have minesweepers assigned in the water to clear for the convoys in this environment, but of course that would risk US ships and Trump is casualty averse to the point of compromising the entire war. iranian sea mines are designed to move using programmed bouancy changes to be at different spots in the water column until they are near where they want to be. they can also deploy from minisubs, speedboats, and civilian dhows.
