It only requires either aliens taking samples and seeding other worlds or small groups of humans somehow gaining the technology to get upstairs, then disappearing under the ice of a gas giant moon. The Vril Germans would be one of several recent examples. The really wild possibility is what if two of these societies going to war with Earth on the sidelines (cool) or caught in the cross fire (very bad). Makes for a good story if nothing else.
