/pol/ was talking about this months ago. It's real, for one thing lots of fertilizer didn't go out this spring because of the Iran stuff. This primarily affects intensive agriculture in the Middle East, Asia and Africa, who were last in line to purchase it and don't make enough of their own. Ironically in the hinterlands in Africa and Asia, in poorly developed regions, many people are still subsistence farming and they will come out ahead compared to the crammed cities, where food scarcity will hit hard and fast.Everybody is still eating last year's grain and beans. Harvests will be poor this fall in many places. With some crops, less fertilizer just means smaller harvests. With others, a lack of fertilizer will result in barren plants. Animal feed will be re-routed to human use but this will just cause more protein scarcity. Bushmeat's gonna get really popular. I read a 20% reduction in yields across the board in the ME, Asia and Africa could be the rule. And Putin's shooting all the Ukrainian grain ships out of the water too now, this grain was supposed to go primarily to Europe, Africa, and the Middle East too!Diesel shortage means harvests are at risk of rotting in the fields as well. Anyway the problems will start soon, this winter, and compound through the new year. But the real crisis won't start until NEXT fall. If the fuel and fertilizer aren't flowing freely by spring (which seems impossible) then there will be a genuine global famine of epic proportions, only the Americas will be safe.

Much of the fertilizer is made on-site in oil rich countries, like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Iran in big reactors then shipped to its destination.
