No one cares about who makes the most consumer goods or who has the cheapest labor, if anything most people are afraid of their jobs being automated. If the US actually cared about competing in trade it would get rid of the petrodollar, declare itself a developing country, then manipulate currency until the dollar isn't worth anything.
