(WSTM) — Students, community members and sexual assault survivors gathered on the Ithaca Commons to rally in support of a woman identified as Jane Doe amid an ongoing investigation into an alleged gang rape at Cornell University.The “I Am Jane Doe” rally aimed to raise awareness about sexual violence, victim-blaming and the harassment of survivors while pushing for change both on college campuses and nationwide.Samara Ferris, an organizer of the rally and a sexual assault survivor, said the event was inspired by reports about Jane Doe’s allegations published in The Cornell Daily Sun.We had seen the article break about Jane Doe and the Cornell Sun and we are all sexual assault survivors and we saw that and we were outraged,” Ferris said.The rally comes as Cornell’s investigation continues to draw national attention, with organizers expressing concerns about the treatment of Jane Doe and other survivors who come forward.Jennifer Brownell, executive director of the Advocacy Center of Tompkins County, said the reported doxing of Jane Doe, which involves sharing someone’s private information publicly, highlights a broader cultural problem that extends beyond college campuses.
It’s not just Greek life. It’s not just campuses even. I would say it’s a systemic issue in our entire culture that we tend to blame the victim,” Brownell said.Brownell said the Advocacy Center has seen more requests for community education since the allegations at Cornell. She believes public demonstrations can play an important role in raising awareness and encouraging conversations about sexual violence.Ferris said the issues surrounding the Cornell investigation reflect experiences shared by survivors across the country.This is happening in other states so I think that this is just a tiny little representation of what’s happening and that’s what’s so important is to get the conversation going, get women together and get their stories out so that women can listen to each other,” Ferris said.While organizers are calling for broader change, Brownell acknowledged that addressing systemic issues surrounding sexual violence will take time.
“So the change is slow and hard, but these rallies are really important to show the support that we’re here for victims,” Brownell said.Several organizers of the rally are sexual assault survivors themselves. They said they hope the demonstration encourages others to share their experiences, speak out against sexual violence and support those who come forward.
