In most cities the pay for these roles is decent, and it can actually be really good if you get to be a supervisor. Many of these jobs aren't directly employed by the city, you'll work for a private company that the city contracts out to. I know what you're thinking "but but we'll have self driving busses and trains in the next few years". Sure, maybe. But the chance that city governments actually use them instead of having public transit be a make-work job is slim to none. Cities are controlled by Democrats and they hate AI and they know it would be a bad look to the public if they just got rid of all public transit operator jobs. That being said, EVEN IF that does happen and the busses and trains become self-driving, they'll still need human supervisors to manage the overall system itself, and they'll need people to actually work on vehicle maintenance until robotics are perfected, and the robots likely won't be able to replace mechanics for a good 30 or 40 years. These jobs are pretty cushy. In a lot of cases they are union jobs, but even when they aren't union they're not bad at all. If at all possible, I would recommend working for some kind of streetcar or subway/train system instead of a bus system. Much less talking to normal people, much less stuff to worry about. The only real downside to working in transportation like this is that you'll be subjected to random drug tests because it's federally regulated. But if you're a sober person or you are just high IQ enough to know how to pass a drug test then you'll be fine
