I was into metal from 89 (I was 8 and my friend showed me Peace Sells) to about 95. I was obsessed with all the usual bands everyone knows and I felt sad that just as I was getting into thrash metal it felt like metal had died and was replaced by grunge. I hated Nirvana and GnR. Towards the mid-90s I gravitated more towards At the Gates who I met in London, Death, Cynic, and more Scandinavian stuff. I can remember when Fear Factory became super popular around the mid-90s and that killed it for me. I didn't know what studio tools people were using but I just knew it sounded "fake" especially the drumming. I hated their fat fuck guitarist too and that nu-metal vocal style. I knew metal was done at that point.The only time I ever returned to listening to metal was in the late 90s/early 2000s with Meshuggah, specifically Chaosphere. That album blew me away but I think once you've heard one Meshuggah album you've heard all of them. I feel sorry for young people into metal today because the bands are crap and the scene has been captured by reddit progressives and turned into one big safe space for weak/fragile/ugly people.
