Low German (resembling Dutch) and High German aren't really mutually intelligible and neither can understand Danish or Swedish. Prussia was the closest equivalent of a country but Prussians went east instead of west, most of yours were from towns on the Rhine that made it easy to leave. They also didn't settle in cities but towns or farms and their Protestant religion meant they only attended churches that catered to their own dialects instead of Catholic church in Latin with different kinds of ethnicities. They also tended to emigrate in earlier immigration waves along with Anglos (1700s-1800s) instead of in the Ellis Island wave (1880s - 1920s) when cities in North America didn't really exist yet.

Ireland is an island and Italy is a peninsula with Sicily being its own island so it would have been easy for them to just identify with those geographic features even if their countries didn't exist yet either. Even Britain is like that as an island. It also probably helped they were Catholic. Germany isn't really anything geographically.
