Its hard to see in the present day but historically there was a lot of significant but not all encompassing overlap between Catholics/Orthodox and European nationalism.Europe and Germany as a unified identity was made by Charlemagne and the unity the Catholic Church provided...Nationalism in the 19th Century and its outgrowth to Italian Fascism and German NatSoc, like American Nationalism, carried a shaky relationship with the Catholic Church with some holding Christianity whether Catholic or Protestant as a powerful force for Nationalists to embrace while others saw the Catholic Church as a foreign reactionary force that had to be minimized. In the 30’s most Nationalist movements of the Fascist/NS worldview tended to tolerate or embrace Catholicism as follows:The United States:Leaders like Father Coughlin and FP Yockey were practicing Catholics and close and influential associates of the German-American Bund and elements of the America First Committee which both persons and organizations received strong support from the Reich to pull America into it’s geopolitical alignment as allies.GLR would later praise Catholicism for it’s anti-Communism, as he deeply admired Francoist Spain and Joe McCarthy’s hatred of communists.Canada:The leader of Canadian Fascism was Adrien Arcand, who was also a very close friend of FP Yockey, and was implicated in a plot that his party was working with German U-Boats in the St. Lawrence Seaway, which had some evidence.Britain:Sir Oswald Mosley copied the German model on religious matters and was very pro-Catholic in a majority Protestant nation, with some Catholic loyalty. Some factions of National Front in the 80’s took interest in Catholicism and its theology.
>>544592129Italy, France, Spain, Belgium, Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia, Lithuania, Western Ukraine:Catholicism in sometimes fanatical forms is central to the national identity and plays a significant role in the ideology of Fascist Movements in these nations. Some canonized Saints in Roman Catholicism are affiliated, or supported movements in these nations, and in the case of Padre Pio he believed that Mussolini was in Heaven...There may be recent tensions in these nations, regarding the Church’s weakness on immigration, however as stated Catholicism is deeply coded in the national identity and nationalist movements. Leon Degrelle is one example.Germany:Germany was for a long time the protector of the Vatican as the Holy Roman Empire (1st Reich,) however the HRE weakened and died with the arrival of Lutheranism, which spread heavily across Germany even into Austria.Lutheran Prussia eventually rose and overtook the Catholic Austrian Hapsburgs, but persued a policy George Washington would later mimic by easing tensions with the Catholic Church so long as it served the state and nation. There were still anti-Catholic sentiments like Erich Ludendorff, however Hitler wasn’t really into trashing Catholicism and praised many aespects of Catholicism in developing German identity. There is evidence to suggest Hitler and other Party leaders remained Catholic, and they definitely understood Catholicism as central to German identity but he and others were more skeptical, although one could describe that as allied propaganda...I do believe Himmler wasn’t Catholic as his view was it had great qualities, but it was a faith of a past era. Catholicism is still strongly present in many German nationalist circles.

God Bless. Hail Hitler.
