USA wants to enact a law that states "if you buy a video game you should truly own it"

games should be at least playable on some level without internet connection so that when game makers servers disappear in the future they cant just shrug and say "well you cant play anymore that old game at all even if you bought it at one time"

The fifth best-selling game of 2024 in the U.S. was NBA 2K25. Every year, fans dump hundreds of hours and hundreds of dollars into the grindy NBA basketball sim.

>But just a little over two years after its release, 2K Games confirmed it's already pulling the plug on it.

The game will be delisted from digital storefronts on October 30. By January 1, 2027,

> online servers will go offline as well, making it impossible to play.

A game millions paid $70 for will become mostly useless. You can still start an installed game but it would just say "cannot make a a connection".
Democratic Congressman Ritchie Torres wants to change that.

"I think there should be a simple rule: if you pay for it, you own it," Torres told Kotaku in a phone interview this week. To make that the law of the land, the U.S. representative for New York's 15th congressional district since 2021 plans to introduce legislation in Congress called the Power To The Players Act. The bill would direct the Federal Trade Commission to create regulations protecting ownership rights for video games.

Companies selling digital games would need to grant players more than just a license that can expire at any time, and games with online features would need to provide offline modes that still work even when servers eventually shut down...

Representative Torres "did not confirm whether any of his Republican colleagues will sign on to support it."

Are consoomers physically incapable of not buying shit? If a game requires some online verification system or whatever even if you only play single player or local multiplayer, just don't buy it.

It should at least have the ability to play offline, it's unreasonable to expect the company to host the servers forever but they shouldn't prevent you from using a third party server or playing it locally. If they don't offer that then don't purchase the game as it's more like a 1-2 year rental if they shut down the entire game even offline/singleplayer. Given the state of graphics and game engines, there isn't a lot of room to improve on sports games, so why they don't have a yearly/monthly subscription season passes or f2play but with paid dlc and ads so you can play with updated rosters as the season comes and goes and they can monetize it more than selling you the same game every year and having to act like it's some new game design, no it's not, graphics have almost peaked, the rules of the sports game don't change, so why bother making yearly releases instead of one unified thing that changes rosters every so often.

>Do you remember all of those "Don't Rape your Coworker" trainings you used to have to do?
>What about all of those "How to be Less White" mandatory trainings?
>Well, from the team that brought you those (and want to force your kids to go to "Just go ahead and Cut your Dick off" classes
