Things change even if they haven't within your lifetime. Texas used to be a reliable state for the Democrats. California used to be a fairly reliable state for the Republicans. People will tell you that the parties swapped platforms but that's far too simplistic to explain what happened. Demographics change and party platforms drifted in various ways but there was not a wholesale swap of platforms between the two. Things have changed before and they will change again.
