Are we in the final stages? It is sclerotic and economically rotting at the core. What will be the final straw that brings the whole house of cards crashing down?

If birth rates continue to fall at current rates to south korean levels, and assuming current death rates and zero new immigration, Europe will go from 500m people to 100m by 2100, majority of which will be african and arab. Europe is already over and there is no way to save it

I believe it would greatly depend on who the next president of the US is going to be and what stance towards Europe their cabinet is going to assert. Should it be a figure more or less in the image of Trump with his global strategy in mind, EU could have a good chance of coming over some of its differences and attaining some degree of unity, since it would be able to effectively cultivate an image of a besieged fortress which needs to work together in order to survive. Should a Democrat candidate come to power in Washington instead, the future of EU would look somewhat more questionable. They would most likely try to reroll America's relations with the EU to Biden era levels, which European leaders would gladly welcome. Under this scenario any degree of unity would be much harder to achieve, individual members will be torn between American-oriented EU sceptics and those striving for more unity. And with the rise of conservative parties in several key members this will only widen the already appearing cracks in European unity. And, of course, needless to say that giving Ukraine full membership would essentially be the end of EU, since it would make it virtually impossible to reach any consensus on any important issue within the Union. Think of it as Orban's Hungary, but much larger and entitled.
