This is a sort of a common consensus about what society should believe in, a non-verbal pact, if you will. When you go against any accepted principle, such as being against racism, you are basically exposing yourself as a foreign element to the system, an outsider. Despite claiming to be open-minded and inclusive, liberal people usually tend to have the same in-group bias, but based on ideology rather than some physical traits. Any misfit is still an enemy to them because they (1) threaten the integrity of the group and (2) are harder to predict/trust, since they operate on a foreign doctrine. You are not an enemy to them due to being racist per se, but rather because you are sabotaging coherence of the collective.
