Here is François-Louis Artois d’Hauteville, 15 years old, a young Frenchman from an ancient Norman lineage.He is protesting against the shortage of philosophy teachers in his school - his favorite subject. Last year, a substitute had to cram the entire Hegel and Kant curriculum into a single semester at breakneck speed.François was the only one in his class to keep up: he had already read The Phenomenology of Spirit. His classmates, on the other hand, struggled to follow, barely discovering this work alongside the Critique of Pure Reason.He did try to help them after class, but those sessions encroached on his volunteer commitments at a retirement home and his cello lessons.That’s why, in this photo, he’s checking a course on his phone about reading sheet music and the foundations of classical music.
