Trump wanted a china pivot since the first day he rolled into office the first term. Russiagate media coverage picked at his ego to change that and it worked. Europe was/is happy to help too since their interests are in aligning more with China and keep Russia as their rallying point enemy.Trump was probably still trying to arrange stuff through back channels, and it is possible Russia only went through with a Ukraine invasion after Biden won and Trump was seemingly completely wiped out as a political force because they assumed everything would continue business as usual.
