>Finland loses territory
>They carry on and pretend they won

This is exactly how the Ukraine war will end.

Nobody says Finland won, merely that Russians had a laughably difficult time with it.

Russia and its predecessors have been raiding Finnish lands since the days of the Novgorod Republic (Swedish–Novgorodian Wars, 12th–14th centuries).

Finland endured multiple Russian occupations, including the Great Wrath (Great Northern War, 1700–1721; occupation 1714–1721) and the Lesser Wrath (Russo-Swedish War, 1741–1743; occupation 1742–1743).

Following the Finnish War (1808–1809), Finland remained under Russian imperial rule for 108 years (1809–1917) as the autonomous Grand Duchy of Finland.

That's over 700 years of recurring hostilities, invasions, and Russian domination.

Analysts at JPMorgan Chase in the report "Ukraine Endgame: The Path to an Imperfect Peace" (May 2026) estimated the probability of the "Finnish scenario" for Ukraine at 50% - this is their main scenario. It assumes the loss of about 20% of territory, but the preservation of sovereignty, the army, and the pro-Western course. Alternative scenarios ("Georgian" - 30%, "Israeli" - 10%, "South Korean" and "Belarusian" - 5% each) sum to a lower probability.

A paradox worth keeping in mind: the more successfully Ukraine strikes deep into Russia (as Finland could not afford to do in 1944), the less incentive it has to agree to the "Finnish scenario" - and the more likely becomes either a protraction of the war or a tougher variant of settlement than Finland's.

In the 12th–19th centuries, Finland was not an independent state. It was part of the Swedish Kingdom, and Finnish lands served as a theater of operations in wars between Stockholm and Moscow/Novgorod. Sweden used Finnish territories as a buffer and recruited Finns into its army. The conflicts were largely Swedish-Russian, not Finnish-Russian.

The term 'Russian rule' is inaccurate for describing the period 1809–1917. Finland entered the empire as a Grand Duchy with broad autonomy, its own Diet, constitution (Swedish), laws, and religion. Moreover, it was precisely during this period that Finnish statehood took shape: its own postal service, judicial system, and currency (the Finnish markka) were created, and the Finnish language received official status. The level of autonomy under Russia was higher than under Sweden, and it was this period that laid the foundations of modern Finland.

The term 'Russian rule' (or 'under the yoke') distorts the essence of the processes up to the end of the 19th century. Internal governance of the Grand Duchy was carried out by the Finns themselves (through the Imperial Finnish Senate), the laws remained the old Swedish ones, and Orthodoxy was not imposed—the Lutheran Church remained dominant. It was precisely the stability, autonomy, and economic upswing of the 19th century that allowed the Finns to form a national identity (the period of 'Fennomania') and to develop the culture and institutions without which the peaceful and successful declaration of independence in 1917 would have been impossible.

Novgorod was not 'Russia,' and the Finnish lands were part of Sweden. These were wars between Novgorod and Sweden, not 'raids on Finland.'

For the people living there it is a great victory, were they alive today and their country met the same fate of the Baltic states, they would be significantly poorer.

Finland also had its own economic difficulties (for example, the deep recession of the early 1990s), but its institutions enabled it to overcome them. Estonia, by contrast, started from an extremely low base after regaining independence.
