Lyudmila Mikhailovna Pavlichenko (1916–1974) was a Soviet sniper who became one of the most famous female combatants of World War II. Credited with 309 confirmed kills, including 36 enemy snipers, she fought against German and Romanian forces during the sieges of Odessa and Sevastopol in 1941–1942. Her military career made her an important symbol of Soviet resistance to the Nazi invasion.When Germany invaded the Soviet Union in June 1941, Pavlichenko was 24 years old and studying history at Kyiv University. She already had experience in competitive shooting and had completed sniper training. Determined to fight rather than serve as a nurse, she volunteered for military service and was eventually accepted into the Red Army’s 25th Rifle Division as a sniper.Her first major campaign was the Siege of Odessa, which began in August 1941. Soviet forces defended the city against Romanian and German troops. Pavlichenko initially faced equipment shortages but obtained a Mosin–Nagant rifle from a wounded comrade.On 8 August 1941, she reportedly killed two German officers at a distance of approximately 400 metres. Over the course of the campaign, she was credited with 187 enemy kills. Her performance earned her promotion to senior sergeant.When Odessa fell in October 1941, Pavlichenko and her unit were evacuated to Sevastopol, in Crimea. There, Soviet forces resisted a prolonged German and Romanian siege.By May 1942, her official tally had risen to 257 enemy soldiers. She had also trained other Soviet snipers, helping prepare additional personnel for combat. Her final wartime total reached 309 confirmed kills, including 36 enemy snipers.
