Is the WEF's Own Nothing agenda going off track? Why are people buying this stuff? Old video games too.
>>
I too went through a phase when I was nostalgic for older technology and started hoarding it.
It's nothing new but /pol/tards of course think that someone now doing the same as I did years ago heralds the end of civilization or some other dramatic happening.
>>
>>544629826
How is it a phase? Most people here are old enough to have bought music and movies and etc. and didn't feel the need to throw everything away.

I never stopped buying music I like. Much of it isn't even available on streaming platforms. If you're young, you seem zoomer or alpha coded, sure. Maybe you were a born own-nothing streamer, and bought a handful of records. That used to be what happened but zoomers are snatching up old players like crazy. I just sold an ancient basic bitch player but with the vaunted TDA1540 DAC to some guy in the military (it was an AFO address) for like $600! He seemed like a zoomer.

Go on eBay and you can't hardly find the good first-crop CD players any more, there's tons of shitty ones but the good ones are practically all gone. Record players are going that way too, tape players too. Costs more to buy a Nakamichi Dragon in good shape now, than when they were new!

This is a signal that physical media is now being horded like video games, the prices are cranking and the equipment needed to use the media are getting thinner on the ground.

If it's a trend, everybody went all in at once. But I think it's more than that - you can't even BUY a properly made CD player these days unless you spend $1000 or more. The old stuff was built better, overall lack of SMC makes it easier to fix, and you'd have to pay out the ass to buy new gear as nice as that which was just average grade just 20 years ago, let alone 40 now.

I submit it's not a trend. It's more like classic car collecting.

Sorry if you're actually a person but this is clearly a waste of my time.

People who had it from before is one thing, but I think people buying it more recently is mostly just people like to collect things.

kek
> $600 for a broken CD player from 1985

You literally proved it's a bubble in your own post. Zoomers are buying thrift store trash because Tik Tok told them vinyl and CDs look cool on a shelf next to their funko pops. The second these kids realize vintage rubber belts rot, laser diodes die, and you can't carry a cassette deck in your skinny jeans without it skipping, 90% of this gear is going right back onto Goodwill shelves.
Comparing it to classic cars literally defeats your own argument. Classic cars are a boomer money-pit hobby, not how normal human beings get to work. Nobody is replacing Spotify with a $1,000 brick that breaks if you look at it wrong.
It’s an aesthetic phase for kids who want to feel unique. The bubble will pop in 6 months when they get bored. Absolutely delusional cope.

>You literally proved it's a bubble in your own post.
How? A bubble needs to POP before you can call it a bubble.

>thrift store trash
Thrift store treasure. You can't get a new high quality CD player for less than a grand. If you're good at researching things, you can find something just as good that's 20-40 years old for pennies on the dollar. Well, not as much any more, but it can still be done. People still find those gold Nintendo cartridges after all too!

Fixing this stuff is easy, you can still order any belt from Goodyear even if they're not in production. People do this in lots and you can get parts easily. Lasers can be replaced, etc. Especially if you stick to more successful parts and less esoteric ones.

>Comparing it to classic cars literally defeats your own argument. Classic cars are a boomer money-pit hobby
Bubble has not popped there at all. You can't call something a bubble just out of spite and you're no Nostradamus, I can tell instantly.

>The bubble will pop in 6 months

Lots of stuff is only available on vinyl, and lots of stuff that also is on CD is better mastered on vinyl and thus, better sounding.

>>544631917
Sour grapes? You can still find all this stuff cheaper than new, still. Maybe not for long. But for now it's the opposite of kikes selling things for ridiculous prices - you can't even BUY a decent CD player for under a grand these days.

If you don't have physical copies of things on your person, you don't have shit, because 0's and 1's are the least secure medium there is.
That goes for every kind kind media, stocks, pm's, etc.
Even your airgapped shit isn't secure.
Plus a 12" gatefold album is literally a piece of visual art.
Anyone thinking things of artistic value or social influence aren't going to disappear one way or another in our very near future is a liability and a genetic dead end, fully clotshotted and a risk to your enduring future.

A bubble needs to POP before you can call it a bubble
Brainlet logic. Housing market in 2006 wasn't a bubble because it hadn't popped yet? A bubble is defined by prices decoupling from intrinsic utility, not by whether it already crashed.
Fixing this stuff is easy, you can still order any belt from Goodyear
Lasers can be replaced, etc.
Absolute delusion cope. Replacement KSS-150A pickup units and original Philips laser diodes are literally non-existent or cheap Chinese knockoffs that fail in 3 weeks. You think zoomers buying $600 plastic junk off eBay are soldering surface-mount caps and re-aligning laser optics in their dorm rooms? They don't even own a multimeter.
People still find those gold Nintendo cartridges after all too!
Comparing mass-produced CD players with rotting capacitors to literal collector items proves you're in financial denial.
You said that a decade ago about old vidya though
Retro games crashed hard over the last two years after WATA/Heritage Auctions got exposed, WII/PS2 games are down 40% from peak. You literally picked the worst example imaginable.

Take your meds, leaf. Klaus Schwab doesn't give a single fuck about your local hard drives or your vintage Mac DeMarco vinyl. Nobody is "rewriting" FLAC files on a cold-storage home server unless you're stupid enough to host everything on cloud subscriptions.
You moved the goalposts so far you ended up in Nunavut. We were talking about zoomers paying $600 for broken 1980s CD players off eBay, and you immediately jumped to "WE MUST HOARD ROTTING PLASTIC OR WE ARE A GENETIC DEAD END!"
> "Plus a 12" gatefold album is literally a piece of visual art"
Thanks for admitting it's literally just decorative trash you put on a wall to show off to guests. You don't care about audio fidelity or data redundancy; you're just a glorified hoarder paying 500% markup for glorified cardboard and plastic.
Go pay your Trudeau carbon tax and leave the tech discussions to adults.
>>
>>544629826
physical media has been growing faster than streaming for quite a few years now, however the largest actors don't seem to believe in it (or straight up want to sabotage it?), Sony is one of the most notorious actors with a general Blu Ray discontinuation but manufacturers of critical advanced parts like optical assemblies/pickups alongside servos for them are pulling out, despite there being more new players launched in the last year or two than in the entirety of the 10s
>>
>>544632411
>Housing market in 2006 wasn't a bubble because it hadn't popped yet?
Typical NPC thinking. You're talking about epimethium, hindsight. It's easy to call the bubble after it's popped. But I submit this isn't a bubble, it's literally cheaper to buy high quality things used now, and zooms have already seen some of their streaming shit taken away. They complain about it endlessly actually.

>Replacement KSS-150A pickup units and original Philips laser diodes are literally non-existent or cheap Chinese knockoffs that fail in 3 weeks.
KSS is notoriously bad and the best Philips and Marantz players all use gas tube lasers. I've never seen one fail. Same with CDM-0 and CDM-1 mechanisms. I went out of my way to find an early (SCSI!) CD-ROM burner with the CDM-1 mechanism, it's huge, but it'll never fail.

>rotting capacitors
Not a big problem, first thing you do is open up a CD player and check out the components visually, then test it, if it works still, the caps are likely not poisoned and will be fine for a long time yet.

>Enjoy holding the bag on 40-year-old plastic audio gear when the kids move on to the next aesthetic trend on TikTok.
I do, I will. And my bag always gets more profitable.

>Need another snappy rebuttal or want to pivot the argument in a specific direction?
You didn't rebut anything, you pretended to be Nostradamus and extrapolated something when it wasn't appropriate to do so, using hindsight. Tell me when the classic car bubble pops, go on. Or how about Babe Ruth rookie cards? Pokemon Crystal? etc.

Zoomers are retards who have faux performative nostalgia for an era they don't really remember.

Oh and BTW that old CD player with the TDA1540 worked great. I have a perfect eBay selling record and want to keep it that way, anything I sell like a CD player I will make sure works by burning it in for a while after doing some light repairs if necessary. Usually a belt or two or just reseating socketed chips will do the trick, or unplugging connectors and hitting them with Blast Off and re-connecting them. I like to do the smallest amount of tinkering possible and put that in my descriptions. People seem to like that actually.

>>544632887
>Cassette tapes are objectively a terrible format in every possible way.
Nah they can sound GREAT assuming the player / recorder is properly tuned up and decently spec'd. As good as a CD really, when you get into metal tapes and Dolby C or S on a good quality mechanism. You probably only heard shitty mixtapes made on a $50 boom box or just saw a Youtube because you're a zoomer.

>And no, you don't actually like listening to some random niche music that's only available on tapes but not Spotify or Apple Music.
I do. Most of the stuff on the WAU Mr. Modo label isn't even available to stream. KLF stuff? Lots of their music had to be destroyed because of illegal sampling, you can't stream it to this day. And that's hardly niche.

>You literally only think it's better because some other zoomtard influencer posted pictures of their old trash on social media.
Nah I'm old enough to have remembered when we got one of the very first CD players at home, it was a cheaper Sony unit and sounded crappy compared to better ones of the day. I remember a few years later I got a Discman and hooked it to the same speaker system and was amazed at how much better it sounded, but unlike the Sony it had a real stereo DAC, many of the first and second gen Sonys had a MONO DAC that would sample and hold alternating channels. They almost killed the format because of that dumbass move lel.

Anyone can buy a PS1 clone hardware made by shit plastic on Amazon for below 30 or even eBay for just 3 bucks. Your hardware means nothing, add to the fact that half these "vintage audio players" are literally running the exact same cheap $5 Chinese components, while software emulation and cheap hardware clones can replicate the entire experience for pocket change. You aren't paying hundreds of dollars for superior engineering or pure sound; you're paying a massive markup for a retro plastic shell so you can chase aesthetic clout and pretend you're living in a decade you weren't even born in.

It means I can play my media. I have record players, CD players, DVD players, and cassette decks, all high end. I even have Minidisc players because I own the prized and rare GESCOM minidisc. It doesn't play correctly on many players so I had to buy 4 to get one where it'll play lel. They have all SHOT up in value so I don't think that's too bad.

>these "vintage audio players" are literally running the exact same cheap $5 Chinese components
What ones? Which players? Are you telling me my old Sony CDP-3100 I have in my basement lair here (pic related) is the same as chink garbage? It's a broadcast studio quality CD deck, one notch up even from most audiophile stuff made of solid gold in fact. You're just ignorant lel.

>software emulation
What? For playing CDs? Are you off your fucking nut?

>you're paying a massive markup for a retro plastic shell
The build quality in a mid-90s CD player, and they are still plentiful, often matches or exceeds the $1000+ "entry level" decent quality players today. If you can find one with a good DAC and reliable mechanism it's a much better buy.

>>544633954

Well some physical media is skyrocketing in price. I bought the Analord set for $900 during COVID, nowadays it costs thousands, $5000+. I also have a signed Aphex Twin Powerpill Pacman, that's hard to value but easily hundreds of dollars, I got it in a lot of a bunch of DJ records probably 30 for $100.

All my SACDs have 2-5x'd in the last few years.
>>
>>544633843
you mean ipsbleed or vasmear being better than a trinitron or any other decent'ish CRT? lmao
you can argue oled beats crt's, maybe plasma but that's also discontinued, but even with oled there's still caveats like much worse burn in, worse motion clarity (despite the fact oled pixels can be driven in the same way crt's beamed phosphors resulting in better motion clarity like some Sony OLED BVMs do), and input lag
the only thing any modern panel beats crt's is resolution and power consumption, if you step up from garbage panels with even worse backlights then color gamut too

>Nah they can sound GREAT
No, they can sound OK with high quality tapes and high end equipment in perfect condition.
Any basic CD player and CDs will sound better with much less hassle or expense. Digital files will sound just as good or better than the CDs, with even less hassle or expense.
The ONLY advantages cassettes ever had, and the only reason anyone ever used them at all was because they were 1. recordable, and 2. portable (once the Walkman was released).
Anyone talking about cassette tapes having some kind of audio quality advantages or superiority has no idea what they are talking about. A LOT of people are just cluelessly repeating things that they heard that were originally claims made about reel to reel or master tapes, which are a completely different form of "analog tape" media.
>You probably only heard shitty mixtapes made on a $50 boom box or just saw a Youtube because you're a zoomer.
No, I'm an older millennial, almost Gen X. My dad was a rich audiophile and I have been around all of this stuff my entire life. I currently still have a high end Technics cassette deck in my main system.
>you can't stream it to this day
So download the flacs from some pirating/torrent site. Even if you wanted to listen to something so obscure you can't find it anywhere other than physical media, the first thing you should do is rip it to a digital file and listen to that instead.
>many of the first and second gen Sonys had a MONO DAC that would sample and hold alternating channels
No, actually the issue was that the single channel chip did NOT have a sample and hold circuit. It had to quickly alternate between playing left and right channel samples, which caused phasing issues. And that was only the very first generation of CD players, by ~1985 all of those issues were fixed. And even the very first generation of CD players still sounded better than any normal vinyl or cassette tape system due to the lack of hiss and static.

It's a consumer reaction to an increasing lack of safety in redundancy of media storage. No matter how deeply they studied it, the general gist of Library of Alexandria and the Dead Sea Scrolls touches on a core fear of mankind in losing knowledge forever, especially as we see people in real-time losing their knowledge.
So maybe there's at least a portion of those people who are attempting any fleeting opportunity to preserve knowledge in more than 1 way to create that redundancy that could theoretically be extracted later.
Some of them are just consooming though.

It's only "correct" because you are trying to LARP like it's the '90s because you think it makes it cooler for some gay reason.
>Your crappy flat screen makes all the games look like blurry diarrhea.
No, it's because the graphics in older games were complete shit back then. It's just harder to see how shitty the graphics are on CRTs because the CRTs display technology is also shitty and inferior.

>No, they can sound OK with high quality tapes and high end equipment in perfect condition.
Great, you couldn't tell the difference between a competently recorded Type II or IV tape with Dolby C or S, from a CD.

Minidisc tried and FAILED to challenge tapes. It took the MP3 player to do that and the sound was inferior unless you used a lossless format, in the old days practically that meant one or two tapes worth of music.

>I currently still have a high end Technics cassette deck in my main system.
Which one? I use a Kyocera D-801. It will match a CD in audio quality with pre-recorded tapes and get there with a good recording I can make. It has onboard calibration equipment (BITE) too which is nice.

>So download the flacs from some pirating/torrent site.
Not available for many things. You can get most anything in 16-bit 48KHz from the Russians but these are typically recorded from vinyl and it can be dodgy. Why not just... play the vinyl?

>No, actually
Yes it's real, actually. And they did apply sample and hold to many players. In fact all the second-crop Sony high end CD players even had the TDA1541. It took Sony until like about 1990 to make their own good DAC, which they started putting into the ES line.

>hiss and static
You don't hear tape hiss unless you crank your tape player up so loud that the actual recording will quite literally deafen you.

>>544635524
Keep them, they're like gold nuggets, maybe better.

>>544635699
I feel much of it is just related to the poor audio quality you get from streaming services too. If you get a nice stereo you can hear it. For example Amazon, which I subscribe to solely to rip music to tape, likes to take all 44.1KHz source material and upsample it to 48KHz. That's a destructive transformation that hurts the audio quality. They do it on purpose, the stream is probably watermarked too.

>>544636168
If you had a shitty tape deck you would find all kinds of issues, often related to rewinding and fast forwarding and a failure of the mechanism to do it gently. My D-801 has a neat feature where it can sense the length of the tape and will automatically slow way down right before it hits the end of the tape then auto-stop instantly, for zero tape stretching.

I also run a plasma TV, it's even better than CRT IMHO. Burn in isn't a problem on later units, which have several washing algorithms available which can erase it. Old units which lack this can still be washed, using a PC running a washing program or a DVD with the same thing. But they usually lacked this capability as part of the firmware sadly. Still you can fix a burned-in plasma TV no problem.

I bought mine new and always run it on half brightness to extend its life too.
>>
>>544636881
Plasma screens are obsolete aswell.
They did go well with a PS3, but nothing beats a CRT up until the PS2.
>>
>>544636007
type IV tapes were pretty rare and expensive, dolby C wasn't common and dolby S literally never left the high end (did it ever make it to a portable player?)
dolby C could easily run into tons of calibration issues so good luck getting your tapes to work on another machine
pretty much everyone was on type I tapes with dolby B at best, type IV was absolutely an audiophile thing (and you couldn't just play them wherever, not only due to eq, they would literally grind the heads of normal players to dust)
though even plain type I was better than the early dogshit MP3 and ATRAC encoders, it wasn't until like 2004 when you could coax something usable out of LAME (and maybe the fraunhofer encoder? or the Nero one? I don't remember) and it wasn't until like 2010 when V0 and 320 kbps LAME encoded MP3s were considered indistinguishable to CDs like type IV tapes with dolby S were

My plasma is great for PS2 and even PS1 games. It relates to the quality of the scaling (they have a fixed pixel-grid) and comb filter I think. Also I noticed some things look better with component, and others composite. PS1 and PS2 games look exceptional with composite, with component or S-Video they look a bit chunky especially PS1 games or early PS2 games in 240p.

It's highly variable. Commodore 64 looks GREAT on that screen. A million to one contrast ratio, plasma still can't be beaten. Watching movies in the dark is great, the darkest scenes have vibrancy, especially with analog media like a LD. And the brightest scenes are so bright you almost get blinded, as bright as the sun practically. HDR still can't replicate that.

Yeah Apple had the Fraunhofer tech back when the iPod came out and had the best home computer encoder for years because of that. LAME finally beat it eventually but by then storage on MP3 players was big enough to use FLAC or ALAC and then not long after that the MP3 player was obsolete because of PHONES *groan*.

Type II tapes and Dolby C was fine for most music. IV and S was great. I have several old Sony Professional Walkmans, a couple D6C's and some of the smaller ones, they are great to this day even recording and support Dolby C and Metal tape. But they are rare and expensive, I bought a slew of them a decade or more ago and even then it wasn't uncommon to pay $200-300 for a Professional Walkman, now it's way more than that.

ATRAC never got there, until they had their lossless option with Net MD it was dismal on the Minidisc front for audio quality. Worse than a tape Walkman, the only advantage was battery life and the fact you could fit many hours of audio on a Minidisc. And even so that was OK because most people just used them while riding on public transit or while jogging, etc. where the ambient noise level was high.
>>
>>544634619
>Vinyl is the closest medium to studio quality.
No. Almost everything since the mid 1990s has been recorded, mixed, and mastered in the digital domain, and the closest medium to studio quality would be a digital copy of the original digital master file (objectively identical). Converting the digital file back to an analog format generation would be pointless and reduce sound quality.
For older recordings that were actually recorded and mastered in the analog domain, transferring to vinyl just to maintain muh analog would be pointless. You would still end up with a lower quality final product than a high definition digital file. Even reel to reel tape would still be lower sound quality and still have massive hassle just to play it back.
About 10-20 years ago, they released some SACDs in Japan that seemed to be flat transfers directly from the master tapes without any additional tweaking or final mastering. They still had small quirks from the original tapes and the playback machines that weren't edited out. For the absolute closest medium to studio quality, that would be my pick.

Vinyl is mastered better, with a higher dynamic range. Even though the CD has a theoretical better dynamic range, it's harmed by the bit density issue, as well as mastering practices where "it has to sound good in a car or from a shitty boom box" born in the 1990s.

It's useless to talk about the "original master" because they always remaster shit from the original multi-track recordings. What matters is dynamic range and you can look that up on the dr loudness wars info site. Vinyl and SACD almost always win.

>>544637707

>It's a consumer reaction to an increasing lack of safety in redundancy of media storage.
The real cause of that is not physical vs digital mediums, but DRM and licensing bullshit.
For a lot of newer games, the physical media is more like a physical license key or software dongle than a copy of the game you will be able to play forever with no problems.
Similar issue with music. The issue with streaming services is that you don't actually own the music, so they can make it unavailable at any time. But if you actually want to be able to preserve and listen to the music forever without restrictions, a digital file on a computer or server you control is probably safer and more reliably way to preserve it than a physical disc that will degrade over time.

I'm amazed to see that the hot-headed and bothered shills, practically menstruating itt, haven't produced a single coherent reason why abandoning real stuff for the streaming garbage is a good idea.

What's there to enjoy? Almost all mainstream vidya, TV, movies, heck even BOOKS are garbage made by globohomo to teach moral lessons now. People can see right through it, which is part of the reason there's a revival of retro. The new shit is made by people who over-menstruated and allowed the message to dominate. Even back in the day, the message was there but it was usually subtle and could be ignored or worked around. But now, I mean what's the point of AAA gayming these days? Or the endless streaming shows? It's filler, demoralizing, bland, drab, safe, gay, vegan filler.

The people, they want MEAT! Excitement! Adventure! This is why retro is taking off, physical media is driving that not because people want geegaws but because they want the old style entertainments back.

Composite is when it was one cable, component was when it was three cables. what you have there used to be called component cables. Been a while but I think blue and red were carried in individual cables, brightness in the yellow, and then green was mixed through all three. People sometimes called them RGB because the cables terminations were often those colors, but technically it's a bit more complicated.
