Lukashenko is a "great" dictator. He knows when to fence ride, he knows when to pick a side that will at least benefit his people (and ultimately save his ass). You don't rule a country for 35 years by being an idiot.
And deep down I do think that he cares about his people, just in a weird self serving way. His actions say it all. I think it's a bit of a shame that Belarus has become so Russified. Belarussian sounds so interesting, but no one hardly speaks it anymore. :/

They're all ethnically Russian with a meme identity, much like your country. It's like someone who's 90% anglo from the deep south in the US trying to pretend he's a different race than someone who's 90% anglo from the north while because they have different accents.

belarusians thought that they had it "good" in the USSR because they had... 3 types of sausage to choose from, unlike most of the ussr which usually only had 1 type of sausage available which was called doctor's sausage I believe and it was filled with cellulose (paper basically) and other fillings and substitutes
even in Communist Poland there were dozens (or at least a dozen) of types of sausage available but that wasn't enough for us and there were of course the issues with the availability or price of pork (let alone good quality beef) in the 1970s and 1980s

so when you have a people with such a low bar of expectations, it's neither hard to appear "caring" nor is it hard to appeal to people with slogans of "restoring soviet stability" and then "preserving" it

fun fact from the 1980s
soviet politicians were surprised that Poles were protesting because of high prices and/or shortages of meat
>your people are protesting because they don't have enough meat? here people don't have enough bread and they don't protest!

I still have family living in Belarus today, in the same region where my family lived before the war, when it was still part of Poland. After the war when Stalin redrew the borders my family was deported, while the few relatives who stayed behind were forced to give up their Polish citizenship and become Soviet citizens.

What’s ridiculous is that, even today they still struggle to obtain the documents needed to reclaim their Polish citizenship. At this point though most of their grandchildren barely speak Polish and the older generation that stayed behind is pretty much gone. But we still keep in touch with them.
