Poor Albertans are walking right into a trap. They were blessed to have black goo under the surface and they benefit from that. It is a shame the way the constitution was originally set up, before Alberta had oil or population, it was under represented in Canada and can't be easily renegotiated now. Now it is a power house and has a lot of people so their deal isn't entirely fair. The problem with Alberta oil is, they have only one customer. They can send it down the pipeline to the USA. If they separate, they become a sovereign nation, but they have a weakness. The USA can say join us or we don't want your oil. It represents 45-50% of the economy, so if the US says jump, it starts hopping or dies quickly. They can shut off the tap and hit up Venezuela for the 4.5M barrels they pump down. Alberta can last 6months, 8months, but not forever. When they do cave and become US citizens, then anyone in the US can move there to work. With 9x the citizens, they will no longer benefit from the black gold in the form of jobs. They go from being the big daddy in Canada to nothing in the US, but an outpost with a strategic reserve.
