Back before things went all computerized to the point that cops could verify valid registrations as they made a traffic stop, my father used to get lookalike stickers printed and just stick those on his plates. He had a friend who did custom dye color-matching.

Nowadays, between ALPRs and Flock and cops being able to punch the plate into their in-car computer to query the state database, of course, that would be impossible.

If you own a car, and drive on public roads, pay the fucking registration. It pays for the roads, signs, lights etc that you use.
It also doesn't give the cops a legit reason to pull you over.

It costs close to $2000 to register a nice car in my state. My car is 25 years old and it was still $130. Plus you have to pass smog testing which isn't free either. If you need an appointment for anything at the DMV they're booked three months out

Its like 75 US in my town. A bit north and its 300.. varies by location. It just depends on your roads. Which is odd, because my town's road lights signs etc are top notch. Whereas the "big city" up north seems to be in quite the disrepair. Far more upkeep is needed there I'll grant you, but their registration fee is ridiculous.

Far less expensive here, even in the metropolitan areas. No inspections of any sort required. A 30 year old beater is gonna cost the same as a 2027 lexus.
We also don't have a state tax.
Loads of fees elsewhere, but only if you want to do the things associated with those fees. High gas tax too. Doesn't bother me though, I don't drive willy nilly and still walk a fair portion, long before trump screwed us. And I get so much cash back via apps and cards.
