Is there more addiction today or has it always been this way?
>>544656979Addictive personalities create addiction. They've always existed. What changed, is access to destructive addictions.
Shalom!
I think it has always been that way, it was just so widespread and normalized to not be sober that it didn't even register as an issue. For example how beer used to be hallucinogenic as the standard and drunken on a daily basis especially by monks. Or how france was serving kids wine with their lunch up until only like half a century ago. Life was always unbearable to deal with sober, humans have always tried to find ways to give themselves a break from being painfully aware of existing.
>>544656979Been that way for a long time. Our monke brains are not prepared to handle many of the things we have developed so we constantly develop maladaptive ways of interacting with them, and addiction happens to be one of them. In the past most people just didn't think much of it unless it was very severe though, and most people didn't have the means for it to reach that point aside from alcoholism, but even then you had to be drunk 24/7 and violent for anyone to think ill of you. Outside of very religious circles, vices were just considered a part of coping with existance.Social media perfectionism and the modern way of thinking where the individual is blamed for everything have made people ultra psychotic about any flaw they might think they have.

>>544657155Alcohol was mainly consumed so much because a lot of alcoholic drinks are cheap to make, easy to preserve for a long time and safer to drink than untreated water (unless drinking straight from a natural source of moving water). Healthcare and times unstable times of war/poor harvest aside, life back then wasn't that bad.>b-b-but muh farming under the sun!Farming isn't that grueling once you are accustomed to it and people would do it in groups to pass the time socializing. Depending on the conditions, it can be very enjoyable work, especially if it is less industrialized farmwork where you are doing many different tasks that change depending on the season instead of just the same handful over and over. My grandpa was a poor af farm laborer all his life, mostly working with his hands or very basic tools, and the first thing he did when he retired was buying a small patch of land so he could keep working the soil kek and kept at it till he physically couldn't anymore in his mid 80s. He's still kicking at 97. Lots people at the rural area I'm from also do small time farming for the lulz. I'm pretty sure human brains just enjoy any sort of varied manual labor done in nature and with other people. It is litterally the sort of thing we evolved to be good at.
>>544657722Yeah, we should all be farmers, hunters, fishermen. Bad things would still happen though. I think addiction might come from the inability to deal with bad things happening.
>>544657722Yes but still, the fact is that for most of human history, the majority of the population wasn't sober for the biggest part of each week, which made life more bearable. I don't advocate for substance use, but I can understand why humans do it. >>544657487It does help to make peace with the reality of reality.
It's was the same in the past, people drank alcohol, fucked prostitutes and ate when they could. What wasn't available in the past were strong opioids, but as soon people got access to them they got addicted, just look at gin craze and tell that it doesn't have parallels to current drug epidemics.
>>544658163Benzos should probably be banned like ludes were.
>>544658163>fucked prostitutesThat's an addiction?
