Not all of it, but some of it: i worked in a rough area and the food desert thing is real. the economics (and safety) don't make sense to open nice grocery stores or restaurants in those areas, so they end up eating highly processed food, fast food, etc.

Junk food is cheap because it has a very long shelf life so there's nearly no loss. There is cheap healthy food but it requires effort to cook and poor people are typically lazy.
