supercomputer AI site because the Brits cannot connect electricity

https://www.theregister.com/on-prem/2026/10/19/microsoft-abandons-uk-ai-supercomputer-as-grid-struggles-to-keep-up/5303824

When the deal was announced in September 2025, the plan was to pack

>23,040 Nvidia GB300 GPUs

into a 50MW facility, with room to expand to 90MW. Microsoft would use the computing power for its Azure cloud services, with the first chips expected in January 2027. This would probably be one third of the chips that would be housed in there.

One important detail remained: how to power it.

You have to understand one GB300 needs 1000 watt power (1 kilowatt) so 23 000 of those need 23 000 kilowatts which is 23 megawatts

As The Guardian reported last month, UK Power Networks warned Nscale

>that the grid capacity needed might not be available until the 2030s.

A UK Power Networks spokesperson told The Register it could not discuss individual connections due to obligations under Section 105 of the Utilities Act.

"However, in general, many datacenters, whilst they can connect to our distribution network, are awaiting works on the national transmission network which we do not own," the spokesperson said.

The brits are beggars that rely on importing stable baseload electricity from abroad. F.ex they slurp 1400 megawatts from Norway and they wanted to hook up another 1400 megawatts cable to western Sweden but were denied. They slurp even more baseload power from the continent. All so that they can make trans-electricity (aka green electricity) from intermittent weather driven sources.

this is pretty much the same everywhere with major inference focused data center buildout
the grid capacity simply doesn't exist and isn't planned at all, they're planning on rolling blackouts and wishful thinking to power shit
rolling blackouts as part of a development plan isn't just an EU thing anymore
