It does a few good things for him. First, it would somewhat appease people that don't want to pay back their loans AND are actually struggling, since there's a cost to it (nobody really wants to declare bankruptcy but sometimes it's the right play). Secondly, he gets to roast Joe Biden while he does it, because Biden was the senator that introduced the bill that makes it so ONLY students can be saddled with inescapable forever-debt, for some reason it's recognized as too cruel to do to literally anybody else. Thirdly, it makes him kind of relatable and less of a hypocrite because he has had several businesses take advantage of the magic don't-have-to-pay-my-debt trick.
