When an insect colony fails to repel invaders, the outcome depends on the nature of the attacking species, but it generally results in the collapse, plunder, or takeover of the hive.
In cases of predation or warfare between rival colonies—such as giant hornets attacking honeybee hives or rival ant colonies clashing—the invaders typically slaughter the adult defenders, destroy or consume the brood (larvae and pupae), and strip the nest of all stored resources like honey, protein, and food reserves. Without a surviving workforce or food supply, the colony perishes.
Other invasions involve parasitic takeovers. In certain species of ants and wasps, an invading queen will infiltrate a nest, kill or depose the resident queen, and trick the remaining workers into raising her own offspring instead. Similarly, "slave-maker" ant species raid neighboring colonies to capture their pupae, bringing them back to their own nest to emerge and perform labor for the colony.
Ultimately, failing to repel a coordinated invasion leads to the destruction of the hive, the death or subjugation of its inhabitants, and the loss of the colony's sovereignty.
