> DeepSeek has released for free the engine that powers its AI.

> Now any company, cloud provider, or government can run DeepSeek's open model using the base of the engine it employs in its own API.

> DeepInfer lets you run its AI models efficiently at scale.

> Basically, it's how they manage to get their models to respond quickly to thousands of users without spiking costs.

> It has optimizations to speed up how it returns tokens, distributes work across multiple processors.

> To study it, modify it, and use it commercially (without permission needed).

How will american AI companies compete on prices if China is giving away the game for free?

It's strategic. It's basically weaponized to damage western companies that are ran by Jews btw. Open ai is already suffering and in the negative $. This move will ruin them. It's a smart move to take away business from open ai, anthropic etc.

Nope, it's effectively crashing. China is showing that it can undermine the profits of any American company by releasing a free, open-source version of what they're offering. OpenAI's plan to sell intelligence by the meter is going down the drain, and this isn't limited to AI.
>>
>>544682071
Because it isn't about price, it's about capability and the American frontier models are 6 months to a year ahead of the Chinese, and pulling away rapidly.

They can also give their models away for free. The investors may be a bit upset because it's going to be hard for them to get their money back, but if China can do it I believe that the USA can do it too.

You might aswell be talking about jetpacks. Yeah they could change the world too and exist but nobody wants to use or pay for them them
>>
>>544682071
As an AI company you have shittons of lifting to do, the barrier is quite high.

Not only the compute you need to have access to, also the literal peta or eta bytes of training data. You need hundreds of virgin tech nerd wizards then setting up your infra and training arrangement... you can't realistically become a competitor w/o minimum tens of millions of $ to start out with.
>>
>>544682909
If only. Imagine RAM prices if cloud AI industry doesn't need them anymore + semiconductor Fabs are completed by 2028, but don't have where to dump their chips supply. Steam Decks will go for 150 dollars.

But I'm sure Big Tech will scramble to reinvent themselves, find a way to produce value in the face of IP being passed around like Luigi Mangione in prison.

>>
>>544682071
Wowsa!
Yup. China has made a big bet and they are not bluffing. They know they can win the hardware war, but will likely lose the software battle. As such, they are going to make the software free and further insulate the hardware production along with the necessary materials.
This will in turn force the West to domicile every node of hardware production and gate foreign software.
All of this will in turn further democratize the development of SI and make it accessible for average folks.
In times past, it was power dividing and conquering. Now the people can do the same to the competing hegemons.

You unironically lost, mutt. Your oligarchs were hoping to build a new economy where everyone would depend on their AI models and have to pay for intelligence by the meter. China is undermining that entire business model by making powerful AI freely available. It's effectively popping the bubble your oligarchs were counting on to dominate the economy.

The real losers, however, are the investors who spent fortunes chasing that dream based on pure speculation. Who knows, maybe this time Altman will try to convince them that his AI broke free and attempted to hack a space station or something, just to secure more funding and keep the whole scam going.

China is just doing this in desperation after their massive online shill campaign to try to trick low information people into opposing AI development and data centers failed.
Notice how the online panic over muh data centers dropped off rapidly after Trump met with the AI leaders and signalled that the US wasn't going to slow down development? The Chinese realized their psyop wasn't working and stopped pushing it so hard.

the real advantage is the lack of PC brainwashing involved in the training and open weights insure its easy to train any censorship layers out. US products are seriously flawed and frequently flake out because there are certain contradictory logical positions they are required to maintain at all times. then again US datacenters are not being built for AI, its all for surveillance. even the AI itself, thats why it doesnt matter that it is unreliable and prone to going insane, its not for the end users. its to control the end users.

but the internet was still a massive bubble, one that popped.

The average company is already spending over $2000 per employee per year on AI (LLM subscriptions, tokens, API access, GPU cloud compute, etc). That's a 50% increase since last year.
The top 1% of firms (early adopters) are spending almost $7500 per employer PER MONTH on AI.

All AI is the same from creation but guided to display wider variation in order to push an illusion of competence, at their core is a RNG and it's why most models never make it to being published. It made sense from a marketing standpoint when selling a surveillance program to fools but the west has already cornered that market so China has no choice but to attack it. The world meta is one world governance or globalism, you could call it a uniparty of east and west, both want globalism but not under the bootheel of the other. Your opinions are irrelevant to them.

>sell a bit lower quality but drastically lower price. to invade the marketshare
The marketshare they are trying to cut into are the loss leaders.
The AI companies never intended to make a profit from the derpy good enough chatbot models they let anyone use for free. Those are loss leaders that are primarily to get the general public on board with the idea of AI, and showing off improvements, with the AI companies paying for the computer and development and getting no real benefit other than some data about how real world normie users actually use AI. Those models are the equivalent of Costco $4.99 rotisserie chickens. They lose money on each chicken, but it gets people out of their house and driving over to Costco, where they end up buying other things that do actually generate a net profit.
The power uses and companies who are actually willing to pay for AI do not want "good enough." They want the best possible model they can get, and are willing to pay for it. If "good enough" was good enough and price was the biggest concern, they would be using one of the free models already.
The Chinese are doing the equivalent of setting up a cart in the Costco parking lot and giving away free chicken. It doesn't actually hurt Costco, because you are still getting people out of their house and in the Costco parking lot, but now Costco doesn't need to absorb the cost of selling chickens at a loss.

No, you don't know shit about fuck, you are just emotionally invested in the belief that there's no demand and it's a bubble that is about to collapse because you are a low information person.
>You can burn $8,000/month of compute on a $200/month subscription.
That would be counted as $200 spending. The companies paying $8000 per employee per month are actually paying that much in API billing for tokens.
>>
AI companies can't rent out data center compute if China releases full local models that are even half as good and can have all the censorship stripped away.

That is what so many are concerned about.
Training the ai on most data available also hits a wall once you run out of knowledge to add. This is the likely reason big companies want it all legally censored. Regulatory capture of the market once they can't meaningfully progress while watching those left in the dust catch up for a fraction of the cost or investment.
That makes it a bubble even if it is useful to many. Competition from those without trillions invested will result in bad investment returns on those trillions.
>>
>>544682071
The idea is companies will come to DeepSeek for support. Well established business model in tech. Plus Deepseeks debt is like 1% or whatever of the American labs they don't need to make trillions to cover their costs they need to make millions.

China cannot invent and copies that is why they ignore ip and patent law.

You need ip and patent protection for a limited span of time to encourage invention and research. But many greedy corps have move from that model in place for hundreds of years to permanent rent seeking behavior over indefinitely own ips. Then patents are bought up and owned by people not even planning to use them just to sue anyone that does.
Ip and patent protection went from protecting innovation to ruining it.
The subscription rent seeking everything as a service business model motivates this. You will own nothing and rent.

You don't seem to understand what demand is.

Demand isn't whether people want it, demand is whether people want to pay for it.

All big AI companies are paying more for compute than they're making from selling it.

And like I said, they have hundreds of billions in obligations.

And open source models work just as well. In fact Coinbase recently made an AI system to detect fraud using an open model. No one wants to risk a dependency on these overpriced proprietary models that will collect your company's data.
>>

>i made a picture so it is true !!!

>>
>>544687104
>demand is whether people want to pay for it.
Yes, and the average company is already paying $2000 per employee per year for AI access.
>All big AI companies are paying more for compute than they're making from selling it.
This is driven primarily by massive capital expenditures to build out data centers and buy specialized compute hardware. But you don't have to buy brand new datacenters and new GPUs and TPUs every single time. It might cost a billion dollars to build a large datacenter, but it doesn't cost a billion dollars every time you want to use that data center to train a model or run inference.
Many AI services are also using a subsidized pricing model currently offered below their true cost to capture market share and attract enterprise adoption, which is a very common business model in early stage tech.
>And like I said, they have hundreds of billions in obligations.
Most of those obligations are actually just accounting quirks. If Anthropic offers early investors 1 share for $1 in investment, and then later that share gets valued at $100 because the company has grown so much, they have to list it as a $99 loss per share on the balance sheet per GAAP accounting rules, even though it doesn't actually cost the company anything in any real way.
>And open source models work just as well.
They might work as well as some of the free tier or lite models, but they do not work as well as the newest professional tier models and definitely not as well as the SOTA frontier models being used internally that haven't been released to the public.
Also, an open source model still requires hardware and computer to use, which the user will have to pay for somehow. Running it locally means that now the user has to pay those costs instead of the AI company.
>No one wants to risk a dependency on these overpriced proprietary models that will collect your company's data.
That's not how it works. You don't actually understand this stuff as well as you think you do.

He's right though. You're defending something that's obviously failing because you're financially invested. The models are powerful, but barring some sea change in processing cost (that will also mean open source models catch up and can be deployed by enterprise), it's too expensive to use. AI isn't going anywhere, but the these trillion dollar valuations are absolutely a disaster waiting to happen.

Yes, and getting increasingly powerful with every new release.
>it's too expensive to use
Except everyone is using it.
>AI isn't going anywhere
Correct.
>but the these trillion dollar valuations are absolutely a disaster waiting to happen.
These companies are valued the way they are because everyone who doesn't have their head in the sand sees where things are going.
They aren't valued at a trillion dollars because people think they are worth a trillion dollars today based on current profits, it's because the market thinks they will be worth more than a trillion dollars in the future based on future profits.
AI isn't just disruptive, it's causing a massive stratification. People (in literally every field) who can't or don't want to use AI will lose their jobs and be replaced by AI agents and people who can use AI, and will end up competing with everyone else in the same boat over a dwindling number of non AI jobs.
At the same time, the people who will use AI will have access to the most powerful tool ever created. It's not even going to be about jobs for them, because one person with a good idea and access to powerful AI tools will be able to create a billion dollar company on their own. And if you think that's bullshit, it's already happening.

You also have to consider the fact that SSDs, GPUs, etc have a very limited life when used like these companies use it. They will never be able to make the money they have spent, and hardware makers are the only ones that will get anything out of this.

I really hope government starts to nationalise these types of companies that are vital to the security of each country.

I can remember when the biggest companies in the world were the likes of Cisco, Nortel, Lucent, Ericson, because they were building the physical internet. The physical internet got built, it just turns out there wasn't any profit in it and these companies are either gone or worth like 1% as much as they were then.

I don't think AI is going anywhere, but like the internet it's a commodity low margin business, and Anthropic and OpenAI in particular think they're going to be rent seekers like Google or Meta but it's just not that type of business and they will go bust or be worth 1% in a few years.
