The only election I know that uses machines is the metro toronto municipal election, because it has multiple votes for mayor, council, school board etc. all with many candidates. Poll workers check your name and affirm your identity, check and hand you a blank ballot, you go behind a screen to mark the ballot, fold it, return to the worker who watches you place in in a sealed ballot box (you cannot leave with a ballot). You’re marked as having voted. When polls close that ballot box is opened at the same location, and elections officer counts them with party observers present (and able to challenge ballots that are wrongly marked or defaced). The count, and any challenges are then reported, the box resealed with party witnesses signing off before the ballot are transported to elections HQ. There’s basically zero chance of election fraud in Canadian elections. Now political,party elections, particularly UCP and Conservative ones are cesspools of fraud where party operative buy memberships in bulk, and because telephone voting is allowed, anyone can vote. There’s zero oversight, party execs in charge of it are in the pocket of candidates, and no one ever complains because there all cheating. Losing is basically an admission the other guy was a better cheater and worked harder to rat fuck and defraud than your own team.
