Technology is forging a chasm between people far deeper and more permanent than the sword or the rifle ever did. Those earlier tools still required human muscle, courage, and proximity; a determined individual or small group could sometimes close the gap with skill, numbers, or surprise. Modern systems—autonomous drones, ubiquitous surveillance networks, algorithmic decision-making, cyber weapons, and increasingly capable AI—operate at scales and speeds that leave no such parity. They can monitor, predict, disrupt, or neutralize from great distances with minimal risk to the operator. The result is not merely an advantage in combat but a structural asymmetry in information, mobility, and force. Those who master these tools, or who control the institutions that deploy them, gain the capacity to shape environments, economies, and even the choices of others. Those who do not keep pace risk becoming permanently subordinate, their agency constrained by systems they neither understand nor can effectively challenge.

Just as earlier generations treated mastery of the blade or the firearm as a basic responsibility for personal and communal safety, people today should treat fluency in electronics, computing, and systems thinking the same way. Reading schematics, understanding radio frequencies, programming microcontrollers, analyzing network traffic, and grasping the principles behind sensors and actuators are no longer specialized hobbies. They are forms of practical literacy. Without them, individuals remain dependent on opaque black-box technologies controlled by distant actors. With them, people regain the ability to inspect, modify, defend, and—when necessary—counter the tools that might otherwise be used against them. This is not about militarism for its own sake; it is about refusing to outsource one’s capacity for self-determination to experts and corporations whose interests may diverge from one’s own.

The most effective safeguard against technological subjugation is the deliberate creation and widespread distribution of open-source counters. Proprietary defenses tend to concentrate power; open designs disseminate it. Systems that can triangulate and track drones using commodity hardware and publicly available software, methods for detecting and disrupting unauthorized surveillance, tools for auditing algorithmic decision systems, and resilient communication protocols that resist centralized control all serve the same purpose: ensuring that no single actor can monopolize the high ground of technology. When such counters are easy to deploy, well-documented, and free of restrictive licenses, they lower the barrier for communities under pressure to respond. History shows that asymmetries of force endure only as long as the disadvantaged lack viable answers. By treating open technical knowledge as a public good rather than a guarded secret, societies can keep the future contestable rather than locked into permanent hierarchy.

Meshcore/Meshtastic is starting to take off, they won't even control the infrastructure before long, bans are impossible. If more people decide to learn these technologies the gap between the technologically powerful and powerless would be reduced measurably.
