The absolute majority of people do not possess their own opinion on any given issue, nor do they even intend to have one. They just repeat whatever the media says and find comfort and security in that. And this is not even because they are stupid or lack critical thinking, this is just a primal survival mechanism - if you want to be a part of the collective and maintain a good place in it, you got to be in line with the shared opinions and customs of said collective, otherwise you risk becoming an outcast and losing the benefits that come with being a part of a group. Thinking too much about this or that issue that the government is trying to currently push might lead one to disagree with it, which risks harming their social standing, so most people prefer not to preoccupy themselves with these things at all and just accept the current narrative. The key part is that none of these beliefs are set in stone - just like in 1984 they can change overnight should the narrative of the government shift and it starts pushing a different one. And very few would call out this doublethink, because you have to engage in it in order to survive. So, all these opinion polls are essentially useless - they depict the narrative of the government, which the public overwhelmingly follows, nothing more.
