I'm definitely getting old (42), but it feels like it's more than that. I used to hit the bar on Friday night until close - now I can't even fathom getting dressed to go out in the first place.

1) People working are working too much hours and they have the weekends to rest, not for partying, getting drunk and spending sunday with hangover to go to work on monday.2) More people now like to stay at home watching movies, tv shows or playing videogames.3) Going out and buying drinks in pubs is expensive for young people. There is the alternative to buy the alcohol in the supermarket and drink before going into the pub but you have to do it either on the streets risking to be fined or in a friend's house near the pub and not everyone can do that.

I remember a quote by some philosopher (I think) that said something like "friendships can only exist where there is a clear superior and a clear inferior." The superior party can indulge the company of the inferior without worry that his status will be outshined by the inferior party. And the inferior can have the benefit of being associated with the superior which can afford him certain opportunities that is inferior compatriots cannot provide.So if there is truth in this, then it makes little sense for the mass of downtrodden men to maintain friendships with each other. There is literally nothing a fellow inferior can provide in return for the effort you put into the "friendship".
