This is one of those cases that effectively prove that despite all the talk about love for their own race and blood, the Nazi regime and its elites did not care at all about German people, they were just their means to an end, nothing more. Just like Hitler would rather have the entire German nation bombed into the ground than admit he had lost, Goebbels found it much more preferable to murder his whole family rather than let them live in a world where he had failed. Sure, you can invent all kinds of far-fetched justifications for both, but none of these would hold any water. Hitler should have surrendered in 1944 and spared the senseless destruction of Europe, which would have never resulted in his victory anyway. Likewise, Goebbels should have let his family flee to the West where they could go on with their lives. Goering did and his children were fine, their grandchildren live to this day. But this was the true nature of the people that seized power in Germany, - they would much rather gut the very people they call family, be it relatives or all of Germany, rather than let their egos suffer a blow. The lesson here is - don't put psychopaths into positions of power, they may say nice things to you, but your life means nothing to them.
