Hydrogen is a complete meme. It has all kinds of storage problems that batteries don't. The supposed advantage is that you can fill up quickly. You can already fill up quickly with a gasoline car.

So really hydrogen is for the niche group of people who need to regularly travel more than ~300 miles and need zero emissions.

These cars aren’t really expected to generate any revenue. They’re nothing but a subsidy grab by BMW (the government funded that project with 273 million euros in order to make sure Germany is „technology leader“ (JFL @ that bc idk how Germany is supposed to compete with China speed) in fuel cells. Doesn’t matter if the cars are returning any profits because the fuel cells tech will be available for other use cases as well.

hydrogen has one of the highest energy densities, your shitty chink EVs will always run out of steam around 150km ON A BRAND NEW BATTERY
in comparison with hydrogen you can probably reach 1000km on a full tank, i made these numbers up, but it is in that range.

>My comment was about the delusional meme of Germany being able to be technology leader anywhere because of our slow working culture

Why not move on to other industries? Why being stuck on cars? Just let Tesla and BYD take over with tariffs and invite better CEOs to invest in Munich.

>Hydrogen is stored below seating btw. It's compact.
The Toyota Mirai has a massive hydrogen tank running along the center line.
Making it a 4 seater instead of 5 seater.
It also has a tank under the rear seats (fine) and a 3rd one in the trunk greatly reducing trunk space.

Hydrogen is not compact at all.
EV batteries also use a fairly big volume but they are usually tucked under the floor instead of taking up valuable cabin and trunk space.

except hydrogen is produced by steam reforming of hydrocarbons, or in layman's terms: they use fossil fuels to make energy to use fossil fuels to chemically alter them to produce CO2 and hydrogen gas, which is then greenwashed and used for niche users

yeah, as it turns out, dependence is really bad. dependence on desert monkeys is twice as bad.
however, hydrogen is still produced in the way i described, with fossil fuels. it's cheap enough that way, electrolysis also requires electricity again which comes from fossil fuels so it's retarded unless you have complete independence from fossil fuels like renewables, wind, water, solar, nuclear, possibly fusion and in obscene amounts. like comically obscene amounts of energy is required for this. and even then, oil is absolutely required because it's a valuable resource for the petrochemical industry no different than chopping lumber or mining stones

>>
>>544804600

>>
>>544801149
Oh I know, but I still think it's really neat
>>
>>544804194
>it's cheap enough that way
It's not though.
Hydrogen is more expensive per km than gasoline and diesel.
And the cars cost more than battery EV's with similar range, which recover much of their high purchase price via lower energy and maintenance costs.
>>
>>544804855
About half that is lost in the car converting hydrogen into electricity to charge the battery that powers the motors.
No matter the source of the hydrogen you'll always have those losses.
>>
Hydrogen internal combustion is better than fuel cells. Both have a fuel storage and transport problem though. Being the smallest molecule, hydrogen loves to leak through the tiniest gaps.
>>
>>544804975
>Hydrogen is more expensive per km than gasoline and diesel.
what i meant was using fossil fuels to make hydrogren is a cheap enough version to produce hydrogen.
nevermind gasoline, which is the best fuel we can wish for. what it shouldn't be used for is electricity, or all fossil fuels for that matter.
here's some fun fact: of all CO2 emissions, traffic is just about 20%. and of that 20% only another 20% is every day people driving in their cars, the 80% is trucks, airplanes, boats and what have you. but noo, the car driver has to save the climate and pay extra for transportation. 1/5th of 1/5th of all emissions.
and even so, if you magically make every car electric or hydrogen or whatever. you STILL need oil for the petrochemical industry to make all the shit you touch and use thousands of times every single day

>German energy policy in three words

>>
>>544806482
it's not only that efficiency, it's also the carnot cycle, transforming hydrogen to motion.
then there is also the whole infrastructure cost. you pay for that as well. you pay for all the delivery trucks, people employed to drive the trucks, to fill them, you pay for the cost of the hydrogen pumps, for building the whole tanks and hydrogen station where you fill it up. you pay for all the people employed there. you pay for it all, hydrogen plants, all the construction materials to build them, all the people employed to build them. you pay for the gas those people use in their cars, to go build them, you pay for all that machinery to make the hydrogen, you pay everything, ALL of it, in the price per gallon of hydrogen. don't think you won't, you most certainly will, because there's no way around it.
even if they subsidize it so they get the market, you will still end up paying for all of that.
why would you want that? ask yourself, why would you want to pay for all of that? what could possibly be reason for you to go like
>huh, I kinda feel like I want to pay A LOT for mileage, for no particular reason. sounds good to pay more. I feel like just wasting money on this
>>
BOTH EVs and hydrogen produce more emissions than just burning gas unless you use non fossil fuels as the input energy to fuel them. Nuclear is the only real solution though it could be supported with solar, hydro and geothermal.
>>
>>544800337
Do we have any webms of them exploding yet?
>>
>>544806893
you still have a choice to use clean energy to power your EV. you can install panels on your house and never pay for transport energy again. you have that choice. but you don't with hydrogen, or gas.

>Hydrogen
Scam. EROI actually puts it on par with petrol. Here's how.

>Take natural gas out of the ground.
>Steam it with water and more natural gas until hydrogen is separated.
This releases a fuck ton of methane by the way.
>Now you have to compress it to fuck huge pressure
>While cooling it to fuck nothing
This takes immense energy expenditure.
>Now you have to transport it in the same massive ships, that can't carry enough of it at once to be economically competitive with LNG
>Then you have to transport it with specialist trucks - same problem.
>Then you have to store it in special tanks and you HAVE to sell it sooner than later due to leakage.
More energy lost.

By the time it powers your car, it's actually WORSE than petrol in terms of the energy the initial natural gas held against the energy that finally drives your car.

You could literally just compress the natural gas into LNG and use that instead, with zero methane emissions, negligible carbon dioxide emissions and far, far better EROI.

TLDR; FUCK HYDROGEN.

wenn man keine ahnung hat einfach mal fresse halten
hydrogen combustion engine powered cars exist longer than gasoline powered combustion engine powered cars, the first one was built in the early 1800s by some spanish guy
the soviets had hydrogen powered vehicles in the 1940s and General Motors had a van model in the 60s
in europe both daimler benz and bmw had hydrogen cars in the 1970s
they again pushed in the 1990s and early 2000s
and every time they got fucked by the established gasoline combustion lobby
then the switch was made to push EV instead of hydrogen powered combustion because of the privatization of the energy market
and the rigged exit from nuclear that caused the price for electricity go from ~20 cent per kWh to over 50
but conveniently we have all these EV charging stations all around now such a coincidence who is profiteering from that
